Corydoras vs. Pleco

I like both of them but I would probably rather have a school of Corys than one pleco
Problem with Corys is that you need sand or substrate
Problem with plecos is most species get too big so you have to have a large tank or get a species that maxes out at 6-8 inches like the rubbernose
I like both though and will stock my setup with both.

Why would your aquarium not have substrate?

Truth
Messy fish but if you are dumb enough to keep a common pleco in a 20 gallon tank you get what you deserve

I prefer plecos. They are much prettier and take care of algae much better. I have two green phantoms which will get to be about 6 inches long, which is not bad in my 125 gallon. You can go smaller if you spend more money. Your namesake doesn't get very big, but they aren't cheap either.
But yeah, they shite a lot.
Caveat: If I had plants, I would go with something else. Plecos destroy plants very quickly.
