Verizon iPhone 5S on Straight Talk

So, it turns out, I'm a little poor and i don't want to have to pay $140 a month for Verizon's service. Granted, their service is awesome as far as coverage is concerned, but I don't think it's worth the money for my iPhone and my mom's flip phone.
Has anyone had success with a Verizon iPhone 5S on Straight Talk? I keep hearing that it works, but I keep reading that it doesn't online. Also, I know the phone has to be unlocked as well. Do iPhones come unlocked out of the case or does Verizon have to do that for you?

Straighttalk will NOT WORK with iOS 7.1.2. I would be shocked if iOS 8 works either, but it's possible.
Long story: my SO has an iPhone 5 running 7.1.2 on AT&T. Went to Straighttalk to try to cut that bill down. Problem is that the iOS 7.1 update completely removed the settings needed to get straighttalk working (I think it was called the APN settings).
Straighttalk was able to push an update to the phone that got calls and SMS working. MMS was not possible. 3G was off and on, and the phone never got 4G or LTE. After about a month, 3G stopped working altogether. I spent 3-4 hours on the phone with various Straighttalk reps. Every single one of them (probably 5 or 6) hung up on me when they couldn't fix the problem. Never got data working again, switched back to AT&T.
I would STRONGLY recommend not switching to Straighttalk without using one of their phones after the disaster of an experience that I had. Apple has removed the settings needed to manually change the APN, and Straighttalk's customer support just wasn't able to handle the problem.
EDIT: if you want to cut costs look into Republic Wireless or Ting. I have had much better experiences with them. Will have to buy a new phone though.

No. No matter what you have to change APN settings with an iphone/iOS, doesn't matter what version. Always have and always will, but it's a rather simple process to unlock and change settings.
ETA:
I brought 2 iphones to ST a couple years (different versions) ago and had them both working after a little research.

Hey, if I'm wrong that would be great. ST offers a good price. But 7.1.2 removed the settings feature that allowed manual input of APN settings. ST didn't have any way to change the APN settings (they had a download on their site that claimed to, but it didn't work).
I'd suggest that OP check his settings (I think the APN stuff is under Cellular). If there isn't an area to manually input APN settings, my experience is that you're going to have a very rough time switching to ST and getting everything working.
I totally believe that prior to iOS 7.1.2 everything worked fine. And I'm sure your phones upgraded just fine. I just wanted to alert OP to the problems that I had, and warn him that there are major issues in ACTIVATING a phone on ST if it's running iOS 7.1.2.

isn't ST based on ATT's network?
if so, I don't think a verizon iphone (cdma) would work on ST no matter what

Don't think the Verizon phone will work, but my wife has an iPhone on ST. I had to do the sim swap trick to get into APN settings. It's a PITA, but possible. Another reason I don't want an iPhone.
