Is Roger Goodell the worst 'CEO' currently in America?

His organization has become a joke and he has lost all control. What a PR nightmare the NFL is going through. All he has to do is come up with a system to discipline/fine players that is consistent and fair, and for that get gets paid $44M/year, but he has failed miserably. I hope the owners kick his arse to the curb.

I'm not a fan of Goodell... But come on. Yea lying about Ray Rice deal was bad. But you can't blame him for the actions of these grown men. Goodell isn't a freaking babysitter. These are grown men fricking up on their own.
And all he has to do is come up with a system that is fair... Fair to who? The player? The owners? The team? The media? The public? All these crazy left wing groups? No matter what type of system he sets in place, some will think it's too harsh and others will think it's too lenient. And social media doesn't help either.
And for some of these issues, there isn't a precedent in place. And everyone's situation is different.
And even though I hate the rules he put in place regarding how you can hit and tackle... I understand why he did it. The NFL just paid $1 billion to the former players because of that. They knew what they were risking playing football, but since the league didn't have a protocol or whatever in place, they won the lawsuit. Could you imagine running a company that just shelled out $1billion to former employees? And those employees knew the risk they were taking and still did it? That would blow and I would do everything I could to make sure that wouldn't happen again. Which is what Goodell has done. It sucks and sometimes makes the game brutal to watch, but I understand why he did it.

A CEO's job is to make money, not to make his company look nice. If he does care at all about his company looking nice, it's in context of making more money.
Whether Goodell personally is responsible for the fact that the NFL is one of the most profitable products in American history or whether he's just in the right place at the right time is certainly up for debate, but I guarantee you these PR issues aren't going to scratch the bottom line, and until they do, you can't reasonably say he's been a bad CEO.
A terrible person, from a social conscientiousness standpoint? Maybe. Unpopular? Certainly. But he's making money for the League hand over fist, which means he's not a bad CEO.

quote:No. Is he bad at judging suspensions? Yea. That's why he hired the former head of the FBI and former prosecutors to help him make better judgments. He's a money maker and is loved by all of the owners in the NFL.

Except he kind of gave himself that role by vesting all the disciplinary power with his office, didn't he? Why not create a panel to handle that shite? They'd maybe do a better job of handling disciplinary issues (but maybe not who knows) and he wouldn't be directly in the crosshairs the minute the stupid botch job on the Ray Rice situation went down. A good manager finds good competent people to delegate to; it always struck me as weird and kind of autocratic that he would make himself the only meaningful decider on that.

He's actually a great CEO. The owners (his employers) love him. And he's been a big part of creating the largest and most popular sports product in America.

quote:true enough, but how much of the NFL's popularity and profitability has to do w/ Roger Goodell? If I were an owner, I'd be concerned that he continues to botch high profile decisions by being inconsistent and reactionary. What's looming is a bad decision that negatively effects the NFL's finances -- something that perhaps causes the league's tax status to change, or opens them up to more liability.

I'm certain there's worse CEO's out there, and i don't think he's going anywhere unless he makes a disastrous financial decision. the dude sure has made some bad decisions though.

He's done a good enough job to not frick it up. Unlike MLB which continues to see interest decline across the board and I believe it has a lot to do with the regulatory decisions at the top.

lol
The anger that some people have for Goodell over the Rice situation is hysterical to me. So he fricked it up. Who gives a shite?

Tagliabue created the NFL we love(d) and the forward momentum that it is riding on, Goodell is slamming on the brakes thinking it is the accelerator
