awesome.
I wonder how the plastic could withstand temperatures generated with an internal combustion engine?

With these Lithium batteries I think they will be all electric. They seem to have perfected the battery to reach the same torque of a gas engine. I'm sure much of the Tesla innovation has driven that.

It's almost 2015, I was hoping for flying cars and hover boards by now.

I imagine a wreck between two of them like repeatedly smashing two Star Wars themed Legos together

I literally had to rewind the part where he said how much it was going to cost 6 times, the last couple of times I turned my tv and fan off and my speakers way up just to make sure I wasn't hearing things...
Somebody please correct me if I misheard because I'm convinced I still didn't hear that correctly, did they say one of these cars will run you between $18,000 and $30,000?

Yes that's what he said.

Surely that would have to come down significantly over time huh? If you could find a way to mass produce these cheaply I think it would garner a good percentage of the market especially with the inroads Tesla is making in the market.

They print metals now, alloys, glass, ceramics. It's getting faster all the time as well.
It is the future. Everyone knows it. GE has been buying up companies left and right.

saw it yesterday, really cool, until he said it cost $40,000

Their printer isn't very advanced. Other companies who hold better patents can print with much better detail, and in metals. Their build box is too small for a bigger car as well. Voxeljet prints parts for Formula One teams. They can go from raw design to finished product in 5 days.
Think about the manufacturing applications. Instead of several machines making numerous parts, a foundry, etc., you have one machine that can print any part.

They basically printed a less durable go-cart. If I was going to spend the money and invest in building cars I would have upgraded everything and reached out to many more people for advice. They have to redo everything if they want to build a commercial grade vehicle. If they knew they had the technology to build it why settle for that.
I'm not that impressed. They just replicated something that was created with in the 1800's just a different build process and material.

No matter how insignificant you may think it may be, it was really cool to watch it be printed and come to life. Attended the convention over the weekend, absolutely amazing show.

It's not that. They just don't have the patents and they apparently can't afford to lease or buy the good stuff needed to print with better quality in greater detail and with better materials.
These guys are well known in the auto industry, and just built a huge service center near Detroit.
Voxeljet
But, as a stockholder, I'm somewhat biased.

When you consider it was only 40 years between the Wright Brothers and WWII aircraft there's no telling where this will be in that timeframe, if not these guys, somebody else, more likely lots of somebody elses.

I feel ya Sabah Rival, more than anything it's the concept that I find really cool. You don't by chance own a 3D printing shop/studio in Lafayette do you?
re: World's First 3D Printed CarPosted by UL-SabanRival on 9/16/14 at 9:05 pm to TakeAGander
no, but I think Baker Hughes owns a machine they got from ExOne, iirc.
