When did public priority shift from family to career?

I was talking to someone today about how in the 50's and 60's, if you were to meet someone in their 40's, it was likely that they would have a couple of kids, at least one of them a teenager. Now when you meet someone in their 40's, it's not surprising to hear that they might have a small child or two, if they have kids at all. Something just came out that more people in the U.S. are unmarried than married.
Within the last 40 years or so, there seems to be more emphasis on having a career and then worrying about family later, rather than the other way around.
When did it change? Was it the baby boomer generation? Was it the generation that came after it?
I also feel as if it's more acceptable than ever for a man in his 40's to date a woman in her 20's, because the gap between generations seems to be closing.
TL;DR When did public priority shift from family to career?

You used to be able to work normal hours and come home to your wife and children and have enough money to be happy.
That was before phones, cell phones, internet, cable, electronics, televisions, nice cars, college education required, etc etc
To afford all of those things you have to go far above and beyond what the 50s and 60s model family could provide. Add on top of that feminism and women also in the workplace coupled with technology allowing you to basically be productive 24/7 since you almost never have to wait on anything anymore and careers are an entire different beast than they were back in the day.
Also, the 80s money boom put careers in alot of people's minds. The majority no longer wants a 3 bedroom single story cozy house in a nice neighborhood with a car in the driveway, people want obnoxious excess and that excess was glorified in the movie industry and the 80s.

With the increase of women in the workforce, the emphasis on the house wife/mother has decreased.

If women took on the traditional housewife role more often, marriage would be more appealing... why get married if there aren't any extra benefits?

Society is incredible materialistic nowadays. More time spent at the office usually translates to more money which translates to higher social status for all in the family.
Sad it is like that, but that's just the way it is.

Thats not what started this movement but its what it has evolved into.
It initially began slowly during/after the war when women took over a lot of jobs for the men. They began wanting more education and careers which started the decline of the housewife.
Money wasnt an issue so it was a great opportunity for women to pursue their interests while the husband continued to be the main bread winner.

People neglecting their family for work isn't ok, so people decide beforehand which they want.

quote:This is largely it. You can incur a shite-ton of debt just by going to school to get a career. If both parents work, daycare will run you at least $8k/yr. It is just stupidly expensive to exist these days, and almost prohibitively expensive to have kids.
