How is the beta as a daily driver? Would it be easy to upgrade from Mavericks or downgrade to a time machine backup if I don't like it?

Sure. Just get your code from Apple ( assuming they're still giving them out) and it's a typical install.

That I'm not sure about. I suppose if you disconnect time machine it will never recognize the update. But I'm not sure what happens if you keep using it so I'd hesitate to say. You probably have to hit some Mac forums for advice.
