Is it normal for shipping to cost more than the product?
Posted by Zach on 9/16/14 at 10:47 am04
I rarely order stuff online or over the phone but today I really needed some shorts that I know would be hard to find in a store.
I checked several websites and all of the prices were about the same... $10 for the shorts; $14 for shipping.
It's not like a pair of shorts is heavy or bulky. Is it a marketing ploy? Take money off the product and tack it back on the shipping?
Do UPS drivers charge the company that much?

There is probably portion added to every package to cover the cost of packing the item.
I've run a few sites and it was common to add flat a handling charge. I'd guess if you change your cart to include more shorts, the price of shipping won't go up that much compared to the price of one. That or the weight of the item provided by the manufacturer wasn't accurate and every site is basing its estimate on an incorrect weight.

Some of them had incentives...like if you buy 80 bucks worth of stuff the shipping is free. But that's counter intuitive since 80 bucks worth of stuff is heavier and bulkier than 10 bucks worth of stuff.

Most places add a shipping AND handling fee... so part of that fee goes to the common carrier, park of that fee is probably a markup on the common carrier fee, and part of that fee is what the company keeps for pulling the item and sticking it in a box.
I only buy online though if it's something I can't find in a store, or it's cheaper when it's in a store. If it's the same price and available in the store, then paying for shipping and handling makes no sense, unless you just hate going to the store.
My wife is famous for this, Zach. There has been more than once where she's ordered something and with coupons, codes, etc, the item is essentially free... and we just have to pay for shipping.

More importantly, what shorts that you NEED to have are hard to find in stores and only cost 10 bucks.
Cotton. Everything in the stores seems to be made of Nylon. I'm from the 50s. I love the feel of cotton. But it wears out in two or three years and is hard to find.

Where are you ordering from that charges $14 shipping? Are you getting them overnight or 2Day? I don't think I've ever seen shipping charges that high unless it's expedited shipping
No special shipping... 3 to 5 days on all the sites. I went with Crazy Shirts from Hawaii...they only charged 12 for shipping.
Soffe on Amazon with retailers offering 4$ shipping
Champion Shorts with multiple retailers offering free shipping
Russell Athletic shorts with shipping ranging from 5.99-6.99
God forbid someone spend 3 seconds searching the internet before making a purchase

I have amazon prime so everything I order is free 2 day shipping
This is the correct answer. Ever wake up at 2am consumed by the desire to have a single cotton ball delivered to your doorstep free of charge?

The solution to your problem is to order 8 pairs for the free shipping and put the ones you don't need away til you do. You won't have to worry about going through this every 2-3 years and you won't have to worry about price increases/inflation.
you are paying for the shipping if its listed as free or included in the price. shipping isn't free.
btw, the reason the stories offer free shipping on orders of $X amt is to get you to buy more. Its incredibly effective at increasing average order size.

If you were going to buy the stuff anyway it's win/win.

Thanks. I book marked it. I actually spent 20 minutes going thru over 50 sites with no 100% cotton shorts.
