I've got a Bose system that we just inherited, with an Onkyo receiver.
I'm not opposed to paying for someone to install the system if it's worth it.

Is there a fair-priced installation company that you recommend?

Do I pull the speaker wires myself?

If you don't have to run anything in an outside wall and if you have an attic access or crawl space access above or below your room, you can easily run yourself.

absoutely you do.

man up. go to monoprice and get some fat-arse reel of 12g speaker wire. 100ft for $29 or 100ft of 14g for $25. your choice.

then grab you some banana plugs (i assume bose speakers have decent connectors). they're like $1.40 a set or $8 for a 5 pack.

then put on some old clothes & get set to crawl around under your house and/or get a drill to cut a hole in your hardwood where the speaker wires will come up.

while you're on monoprice, might as well pick up some optical cables, F HDMI to F adapters, some HDMI with ethernet cables & other crap for super cheap.

you'll be happy you did it yourself.

just make sure you measure first to see how much speaker wire you need, then buy about 25% more than you think you need because you need some slack behind the components to move them around and if you're like me, you always tend to cut the speaker wires too short.

I also recommend one of these to put on the wall behind your stereo to keep it nice and clean:

I should have decent access to all of the parts in the ceiling, but I think my A/C unit is above where my receiver would go.
Is there some kid of Fishing tool you can use?

Do you drill small holes in the rafter beams for the wires to run through?
Or do you run them along the roof and drove them down?
(I'm guessing along the roof, but wanted to ask.)

Is there a website that helps design the acoustic layout for non-rectangular rooms?

yes

any exterior walls? Exterior walls will have cross beams between your studs which will make things more difficult.

You don't need 12 gauge speaker wire. 14 or 16 is fine. If you are running wires down the wall make sure you buy speaker wire that is rated for in wall use.

Those are fire stops and not every house has them. An inexpensive stud finder will tell him if he has them or not.

No offense but with the Bose speakers I wouldn't bother.

No, air intake/ fan in the attic just sits directly over the entertainment center. So fishing will suck.

I'll probably drop the wires through the ceiling. That's how the speakers seem to mount.

The set does come with an analyzer to sit in the middle of the room to adjust the speakers.

I only mention the configuration b/c we have a living room that butts up against a set of stairs and a breakfast area.
So the back wall isn't straight all the way through. I can imagine it's going to be difficult to pick the right location to mount the speakers.

I'd just do my best to hide the wires, outside of running one bundle to the back.

+1
I would use atleast 16 gauge CL2 rated wire depending on the distance

My house was pre wired in the living room and media room but I hung all the speakers and plates and connected to the system. running the wires is the hardest part depending on your attic access. I had the contractors electrician go ahead and run my wires on the patio to where my speakers were going to go then I hooked up everything and installed the speakers on the patio.

I highly recommmend a pair of wire strippers

If it's a room that is open to other rooms just place the speakers where they make the most sense. The back is supposed to be a diffuse sound field. I'd use the analyzer that comes with the set as it will set the levels of the individual speakers for you.
