Did people's teeth rot out a lot faster back in the olden days?

Like pre Little House on the Prarie days. Back before Oral B toothbrushes, toothpaste, fluoride and such. Or did the lack of Dr. pepper, jolly ranchers, meth and whatnot equal everthing out?

Yes, and people also didn't live nearly as long.

Yes, because no fluoride in drinking water.

Considering the fact that barbers did extractions, I would say they had poor teeth/hygiene.

I knew that. But when we think back on the olden days people don't really envision everybody running around with a mouth full of crickets. But I guess maybe they were.

Yes, they did. And rotting teeth can lead to jawbone decay, too.
This is supposedly why George Washington has such a weak looking chin in all his portraits. Apparently, young Washington had a much stronger chin.

Yes and no. The infant mortality rate was much higher. Therefore, you had a bunch of people who lived very short lives, and when they calculate average life span, those short lives pull down the average.
If you made it past infancy, chances are you would live a pretty long life - 60 or 70 years.

If you look at the portraits of an older Washington, you get a sense that his mouth and cheeks look "full". That's because he packed his mouth with cotton during sittings for portraits to try to give the illusion of a stronger jaw.

Tiger Mart or Tonores for sure. Couple other gas stations have it too.

I've seen a few Westerns in my day...everybody seems like they had picture perfect teeth back then.

I have seen some evidence that the introduction of grains and sugars into the human diet are largely responsible for our bad teeth. People 300 years ago didn't eat as much grain and sugar products as we do, since those things were much more difficult to harvest then. That probably means the overall damage to their teeth wasn't as bad as ours gets, but they didn't have effective dentistry to fix it either. So, yeah, they rotted and had to deal with the pain.

Yep. But to be more realistic they should probably all have Livingston parish teeth.
