Internet speeds in the morning vs. night

Lately my connection has been really slow in the evenings and later into the night. In the morning my connection runs at 25d/10u and a ping of 20-30, but at night I'm lucky if I get 0.50d/1u and a ping of 300-500. I've called Cox and they blame a bunch of people being on at once. I can see local usage causing some of a drop, but that seems a little excessive, no? I can't even stream videos without it buffering every couple of minutes. Seems like Cox needs to get their shite together and fix some things in the neighborhood.

You may be on an over subscribed pipe. On cable, you share bandwidth amongst everyone in a general vicinity. When too many people are on, streaming, playing games, etc., everyone sees a massive drop.

as a previous poster said it has to do with an overtaxing of the system at night.
In the morning most people are getting read to go to school or work, at night people are watching movies, playing games, downloading movies, downloading files, etc. so it will be slower.
yours sounds on the extreme side I would talk to Cox. They may run some more cables in your area.

I'm going to keep calling them. So far all I've gotten from them is the default "reset your modem" and "tough shite." I've reached out to some neighbors, so hopefully we can get a coordinated campaign going.

so much for best customer service. (don't they claim this?)
something else you may want to check is wired connection, it is probably on cox's end but many times a wired connection will work better than the wireless.

This happened to me because my area was growing so fast that Cox could not handle the increased load. I was able to get a discount from Cox because I was not getting the speed I was subscribed. It took multiple calls and a few technician visits to properly prove it was an ongoing problem. Once proof was there, I didn't pay full price for internet until it was fixed.
Good luck!
Good luck!

i guess you'd say the difference in internet speed is like night and day

I had a similar issue with Cox a few years ago, where every single night around midnight my connection would start dropping out. I just kept calling and being persistent until they finally investigated the problem. It turned out to be a pretty widespread issue, but it only happened so late at night that I guess they got few complaints about it.

This happened to us a few years ago with Comcast. Every afternoon/evening our Internet would either slow down or go completely out. We would also have problems with the TV as well, a lot of pixilation/framing.
It turned out that it was a bad amplifier on one of the poles leading into the subdivision. I want to say we had to call Comcast HQ in Philly before we really got someone to listen to us and do much about it.

Yep, Hulk is right. I had a huge problem with this a few years ago when I was living in an apartment. I called my ISP and they came and boosted our bandwith somehow.
Always remember the squeeky wheel gets the oil. If you bitch enough to them they will come and fix it.

What modem are you using? With Cox, you should be using an 8x4 channel modem -- and docsis 3.0 obviously.
