Escort Services: How do they work? Costs?

While driving to work today I saw a truck with "maw and paw escort service" on the side of it. Obviously, it was following a larger truck with a mobile home on it.
What is the purpose of these types of trucks? The mobile home already had an "OVERSIZED LOAD" sign on it.
Also just out of curiosity, how much do these escorts make?

No, I'm asking why it is a law. There is already a sign on the wide load, why do we need another (and in some cases 2 more) truck/minivan to tell us the same thing.

If a load is over I think 13' wide and or over 90' in length it is required by law. The escort will also stop traffic for the trucks to make turns etc. Depending on distance it's usually 2-300 bucks per escort and each escort can take 2 trucks.

Think of them as a scout for the trucks. They find problems on the road before the loads get there.
