Would he be regarded as the GOAT? I don't remember Marino playing, but looking at the stats, his numbers are incredible. Considering the rules he played with, the shorter seasons also. Seems like he would've had some incredible seasons in today's game, no?

The NFL had already moved to a 16-game regular season schedule by the time he arrived in the league.

But yeah. He would dominate in today's NFL.

This reminds me of one of my favorite Ted Williams stories. He was being interviewed by a writer at Red Sox Spring Training, and the writer asked him how did he think he would do against today's pitching, and this was in the '90's?

Williams replied probably about .270.

The writer said you really think today's pitching is that much better?

And Williams said Hell no, but I'm 72 years old.

The year Marino threw for 4800 yards, he was 400 yards ahead of the second-place guy. His 48 TDs were 16 ahead of #2, 20 ahead of #3.

ETA I was referring to his record-setting year. Sorry about the 4800 number.

Imagine if he could play today and have somebody like Calvin Johnson to throw to. He was almost 400 yards ahead of the second place guy in his record year too.

Dan is the greatest QB to ever play the game.

My quickest way to identify sports retards are ones that trot out the irrelevant, "But he never won a championship!"

That's a team accomplishment.

Marino lost to the greatest QB of all-time in his one and only Super Bowl appearance. Miami and San Francisco were the two best teams in the NFL in 1984. Miami went 14-2 and San Francisco went 15-1. The 49ers beat the Dolphins in the Super Bowl by a score of 38-16. Montana was the MVP of that game as well.

Montana was great, but he benefited greatly by having an all-time great WR for most of his career. Marino never had a great receiver much less a top 5 all time.

Montana was great in the west coast system. It was a system never seen by the NFL. Marino was the system. Bill Walsh even said this

I love when people say this. Joe had already won 2 super bowls and was widely regarded as the best QB in the game before Jerry ever got there.

quote:

The 49ers defeated the Dolphins 38-16 and Montana earned his second Super Bowl MVP award. After the game, 49ers head coach Bill Walsh said: "Joe Montana is the greatest quarterback today, maybe the greatest quarterback of all time."
