Catalpa worms on sawtooth oak?

Im kicking myself for not taking pics, but I have a 3 year old sawtooth I planted at my camp in norwood, and noticed something was eating the leaves. Then I saw a half dozen caterpillars that looked like catalpa worms. Does this make sense or is it another kind of caterpillar? Thanks

There's lots of types of caterpillars.
Was this recently? I really doubt it was catalpa worms. I've only seen them in the spring.

Yes it was yesterday. They were colored yellow and black striped length wise. Searching louisiana caterpillar identification, there was no yellow / black caterpillars. Im gonna take a pic when I go back up there.

yep...catalpa worms have no hairs or anything and have what looks like one big spike sticking up at the tail end...
be careful, you may be looking at buckmoth caterpillars, which will frick you up if you even touch one...

I have several catalpa trees in my yard, and I haven't seen catalpa worms in nearly 20 years. Same with just about everyone I know who has catalpa trees.
I guess all the agricultural spraying here has killed them off.

Found a tree this year that had been recently stripped. Caterpillars were gone, but it was the first sign of any I've seen in several years. I'm determined to organize a mass reintroduction in the Florida Parishes at some point.

They're definitely still here. We get them every year.

Supposedly the cotton pesticide has wiped them out. i guess they were similar to Cotton Leaf Worms.
So, OP it must be something different.

That's some powerful pesticide, then. Nobody has ever raised cotton up here in the Appalachian Mountains, and the tawby worms disappeared up here 20 or 30 years ago. No fire ants here, either. Sure would like to know what killed em off. Best bream bait I've ever used.

Uncle George is picking his second crop of catalpa worms in Pointe. He has had a good year.
