best of all of the game birds, imo. a combo pheasnt/quail hunt is a fun day...but you have to do it at a preserve. There is a very cool place to do it called Long River Lodge in Mellville, la...

Long River might not be in operation. Place was very nice, with plenty of land to hunt.

Great news!!….Long River Lodge will be reopening for quail hunting this fall. We will be introducing some exciting new hunting packages along with new field layouts and a growing population of wild birds. The number of hunting days will be limited so be sure to call or email to reserve your date for the 2013-14 season.

Hope they make it, Joe and I discussed it about 2 years ago. He was farming and managing 5k acres for quail. He said the released birds were living and reproducing...

some will, some wont

grouse for example are pretty tough to manage and woodcock/quail do slightly better

and if you toss enough $$$ at a problem it can be somewhat fixed

true story

Doesn't surprise me at all.

I saw a map one time that showed the wintering ground for the North American woodcock population. While I don't remember the exact coordinates, what this article/map said/showed is that 90% of all woodcock winter inside of a triangle that essentially went from Alexandria, southeast to Covington(ish), west to Lake Charles, then back to Alex.

When I was a 12 year old kid, I moved from the heart of Metairie to La Place. Keep in mind, prior to moving to La Place, I LOVED to hunt, but only got the chance to go when I was at my kinfolks house in North La. So when we hit La Place, I was immediately thrust into a place where I could walk from my house and hit the swamps. It was heaven (the swamp we hunted from the house is essentially that swamp that's between Airline Highway and I-10, on the east side of La Place - googleearth Somerset Street, La Place, La - it's a HUGE piece of woods).

Anyway, forgive the digression....this fellow across the street - blessed with 3 daughters - loved to hunt. My dad wasn't much of a hunter, so he was fired up when a 12 year old kid that lived to be in the swamps moved across the street. He introduced me to cajun style/after work duck hunting. He'd get in from the plant, we'd haul arse on his motorycycle to the back of the neighborhood, stand on this levee, and shoot at woodies going to roost. One time, this really "little woodie" came buzzing by. He cut it, and picked it up, and said "know what that is slick?" I had no clue, and he told me it was a woodcock.

During my years of hunting the LaPlace swamp, I jumped several (got dawg those things are hard to kill just jump shooting them...first, you've got to put your heart back in your chest), killed a few while we were shooting woodies going to roost, killed a few more with the old "one eyed dog" as a beer drinking teenager riding around with a .22, etc.

INCREDIBLE table fare. Very underrated bird, the woodcock is. Very underrated.
