Nearly three in 10 former NFL players will develop at least moderate neurocognitive problems and qualify for payments under the proposed $765 million concussion settlement, according to data prepared for ex-players' lawyers and made public Friday.

quote:

Their actuary expects 14 percent of all former players to be diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and another 14 percent to develop moderate dementia over the next 65 years, according to the data. There are more than 19,000 former players still living, meaning nearly 6,000 of them will fall into those two groups. Another 31 will be diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease and 24 with Parkinson's disease during their lives, according to the data.

quote:

About 28 percent of all retired players are expected to be diagnosed with a neurocognitive injury that is eligible for compensation under the plan. But only 60 percent of them are expected to seek awards, based on prior class-action litigation.

Very troubling numbers if true....My Goodness

Dementia is a direct result of neuroplasticity. Keep your brain active, you don't lose it. This is why those elderly who do ppuzzles and read a lot are nearly as sharp as they were in their 40's.

I'm all for player safety, but I'd raise some concerns here.

1. I'm not sure that 3 in 10 is very much out of whack with the general population. Most Octagenarians and older develop some form of mild-severe dementia by the time they pass.

2. You can make a "projection" say just about whatever you want it to say. Models on population trends, the spread of infectious diseases, etc. are routinely wrong.

I would gladly take that risk if I could make millions a year.

I get that but Im reading it like the NFL players are in line with normal numbers for the general populace, but they are becoming a risk of getting said disease at a younger age. My grandmother had dementia but she was well into her 80's. These NFL players are getting it in their 40's or younger, just look at Jon Abraham

I'm assuming they would have the desease later in life anyway. Football probably just sped the process up.
