Returning to Baton Rouge (visit) for the first time in almost 12 years

Grew up in Ascension Parish and moved away after graduating LSU in early 90s. Sporadic visits through '03, then family popped smoke. My connection to the area since that time has been LSU football, TD, and contact with a few friends. One’s getting married in BR in January and I just pulled the string on tickets.
I’m just now realizing how odd and slightly unsettling it is that I’ve been away for so long from the place that shaped and defined the first 20+ years of my life. I know that I’ll scarcely recognize the LSU campus and Prairieville / Galvez area of my memories. I’m very much looking forward to seeing and experiencing all of the change that I’ve only heard about.
And then I’ll get on a plane and leave – hopefully to return with more frequency.
I fully realize that few – if any – OTers give a remote sh*t about any of this, but I’m stoked and felt the need to share. And I’m pretty sure that’s why God made the OT Lounge.

Where do you live in Alexandria? What part of town?
...and what are you asking, if anything?

I left 19 years ago and we go back every once in a while. It's been about 3 years for me. Galvez is exploding. They've got a traffic cirlce in front of Berthelots (now Dutch's)! Did you go to Galvez Elem, home of the mighty Pirates?

I lived in Springfield, about a 3-iron from Ft. Belvoir's Telegraph Gate.

quote:Yes indeed. Got kicked out of St. Theresa's because I was a hellion. Actually, I think I was "asked to leave" - not sure if there's much of a difference. Started Galvez in the middle of 4th grade. Teachers I remember (in random order): Ms. Colbert, Ms. Allen, Ms. Sparrow, Dr. Young, Ms. Simpson (was hot), Ms. Babin.

Is that school still there? I know there's a new Galvez Elementary.

Places to avoid in BR:
--Anything north of Florida Blvd.
--Almost anything south of Florida Blvd.
Hope this helps!

I love my occasional visits back to BR.
Don't miss living there, but always try to make it back several times a year.

quote:Staying with a cousin who lives on Sturbridge Lane (off Lobdell near Goodwood). Not sure if wedding is in BR or P'ville.
What part of town are you staying in?
I'm devoting a day to riding around Ascension Parish and taking all that in, half a day on campus, then the wedding will take over.
