I was working in Blantyre, Malawi a few years ago and the hotel where I was staying had a beautiful flower garden along the fence line in a sort of courtyard setting. There were signs along the sidewalk saying "Stay on the sidewalk." I wanted to get a close look at the flowers so I asked the hotel receptionist if it would be okay if I walked on the grass to get to the flower garden.

She said I could but only at my own risk due to the cobras which might be in the grass.

She also asked me what floor my room was on. When I told her the third floor she said I was safe from the cobras because they could only climb up the bricks and get in through windows on the first floor.

I never did get a close up look at those flowers....

Is that when you went to your room and booked the next flight out of Malawi?

Me and my little brother were at our grandparent's house in Monroe one summer. They had this huge open field with a big pond at the end of it that we would always fish in. My grandma had warned us the day before that she had seen a lot of snakes around the yard lately so to be on the look out. We got to the pond, rigged our poles up, and started fishing. There was this large dead tree trunk on the shore close to the water that was perfect to sit on and fish and we both took a seat on it. Not 10 seconds later we hear this rattling noise that was so loud we immediately knew it had to be directly under the log. I looked down and ab 12 inches away from my brother's leg was a huge fricking GDCK reared up in the strike position. My stomach dropped, I knew that thing was going to bite him at any moment. I told him to quickly pull his legs up then swivel to the backside of the log and run. As soon as he did that the GDCK took off into the pond and disappeared underwater. That sob had to have been at least 6 feet long. We both walked back to the house with no fish and needing fresh pairs of Hanes.

I was weedeating with one of those big arse 1hp Shindaiwa weedeaters with the shoulder strap in a huge brush pile. Looked down to see about a 3-4 foot rattlesnake between my legs. I proceeded to try to hit it with the weedeater as well as run away at the same time.....

I forgot about the whole shoulder strap thing. I still have scars on my legs from the weedeater string.

I've come across many many rattlesnakes hunting in South TX... never had one strike at me fortunately. I tanned the skin from the biggest one, it stretched out to 7'2" long, but was probably closer to 6' alive.
