At least in one case, one high school junior with major college football offers, wide receiver Drake Davis (Fork Union, Va.), is opting for the latter (soccer). According to Fork Union head coach Brian Hurlocker, Davis is not playing football this year to focus on soccer.

The four-star recruit is ranked as the nation’s No. 10 wide receiver and the No. 3 prospect in the state of Virginia in the 2016 class by 247Sports.com Composite Rankings. Davis has offers from Alabama, Miami, Maryland, Temple, Florida State, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

It will be great for the game in this country to start seeing more of this.

Is that the same Drake Davis who went to Dunham for a little while and is Lester Earl's kid?

ETA: Yes it is. Freak athlete. That's bizarre and cool and random as shite.

College soccer is holding the game back.

Wasn't a comment on the value of college soccer. More a comment on athletes choosing soccer over other opportunities in the so-called "big" sports.

Is he in the US residency program?

If he isn't, then this is a huge mistake.

If he doesn't play college soccer (goes overseas or MLS directly from HS), he'd still be able to play college football if his soccer career doesn't work out a la Chris Weinke.

I don't know anything about how good this guy actually is at soccer. Would assume he's pretty good if he's passing on top-level opportunities in football. I did read in the article he's 6'4", 215 pounds, and runs track. His measurables sound great for a CB or beast-mode striker.

ETA: That's a good point about his college FB eligibility if he were good enough to go straight into playing professionally.

Pretty cool that a big time high school athlete is leaning toward soccer.

Here's the Rant's thread about it. Guy on there said he played with him at Burbank and he's not all that good. Just hear say but possibly just another example of great athletes not equaling great soccer players.

If true, I guess that means that he really loves the game and/or has post-World Cup fever. Which is good to see.

That said, he needs to be in a US program else it makes no logical sense to give up football considering what teams were after him.

I just find it kind of odd that the article doesn't have any information about his soccer career thus far. You think it would at least say what position he plays or how many appearances he's had for his high school team.

That highlight video shows he's a damn legit WR. Just glad to see he loves the game enough to forego opportunities in football to pursue it as far as he can go.

Depending on how good or bad he is at soccer, I'm not sure if this is a good thing for him.

Well, you and I might look at it objectively and say if he's not good at soccer then he should take the opportunities in football. But only he can tell you what he wants and what's best for him. And he seems to want to play soccer, so I say go for it.

ETA: That being said and all, if he can't kick a ball, maybe someone should pull him to the side and have a talk with him.

I played against him at bbank. Freak athlete but not that good of a soccer player.

He attempted a bicycle kick and he jumped so high he made contact with the ball when it was the same height as the crossbar

Didn't that article say he has D1 offers for soccer too?

Besides being very athletic, did he have any strengths or possible strengths to his game? Big fast athletic guy could make for a good CB if he doesn't have great ball skills in the Matt Besler mold.

his size speed and strength are all he has going for him.

I remember being very mad because his first touch was bad as was his passing. but on top of that was some of the worst decision making ive ever seen.

with that said i thinks it awesome hes giving it a shot. who knows if he works hard enough he could become really good. and lets face it sitting out a year of football will not hurt his chances of playing in college. all football players have to do is be athletic
