Now this would be irony - John Kerry, who made a reputation lying his arse off about atrocities he saw committed in Vietnam in the vein of Genghis Khan, presiding over a foreign policy heavily influenced by the Great Khan.

I think the point might be that it is ISIS that is following the Khan's policies.

Very good read, especially if you like Obama bashing.

I think we already knew that.
The point is that someone with that pathology won't exactly take seriously a jackass using Twitter tags as a form of warfare.
They won't take us seriously until we're bearing down on them in a way so brutal that hardened psychopaths would wince.

Mongols conquered these lands in question, made minarets of human skulls. End result Mongol overlords become Muslim.

The liberal pseudo-intellectual affected pronunciation of names/places is one of my favorite phenomenons ever.
It's the first thing I thought about when the John Kerry's named was mentioned in a topic about Genghis Khan.

ETA: gotta be quick around this place.

I've been listening to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History, specifically "The Wrath of Kahn" about Genghis Kahn. He discusses the revisionist history of Kahn as he is portrayed often positively today (just look at the restaurants with a Mongolian theme). I never realized how ruthless he was; he was responsible for the death of 10s of millions of people among other horrible atrocities. He even murdered his own brother.
Although of the major leaders of the world, both good and bad, made decisions that led to horrible consequences, and conversely even the most ruthless leaders probably had some good leadership qualities; however, it takes some serious twisted logic and morality to just brush off the "obvious flaws" (like murdering 10s of millions of people) to advocate for one of Kahn's good leadership qualities.
Sure these views will rile up people who advocate for neoconservative policies, but they unfortunately get represented as the mainstream of the right instead of the extreme, even if many across the spectrum are tired of these types of policies.

The thing I don't get about those who want the US to go Khan is why so many of them hate a far, far more humane and merciful American General who broke an enemy's will to fight- hero of the Republic William Tecumseh Sherman.

Sherman's scorched earth policies have always been highly controversial, and Sherman's memory has long been reviled by many Southerners. Slaves' opinions varied concerning the actions of Sherman and his army. Some who welcomed him as a liberator chose to follow his armies. Jacqueline Campbell has written, on the other hand, that some slaves looked upon the Federal army's ransacking and invasive actions with disdain. They often felt betrayed, as they "suffered along with their owners, complicating their decision of whether to flee with or from Union troops."[15] A Confederate officer estimated that 10,000 liberated slaves followed Sherman's army, and hundreds died of "hunger, disease, or exposure" along the way.[16]

quote:Hey, you raise a great point. That there are those who want the US to "go Khan" in dealing with ISIS. That was not my intent in posting the link to the article. I would not be happy if the US "went Khan" all over the place - even to "get" ISIS/L. But for the sake of clarity, when I said...
those who want the US to go Khan
quote:what I meant was for those who are in positions of real leadership (military, political) to understand ISIS/L not as a disjointed little group of terrorists, but as a modern manifestation of the same ruthless conquest mindset as Genghis Khan. And thus, to gear any opposition/action to meeting such a foe (not matching ruthless for ruthless, but with toughness and absolute determination to repel and destroy these monsters).

Yep, its ironic that you would compare ISIS to the Confederate South, however to a degree it fits. Both driven by an illogical ideology that consumed them. Both believed in slavery and a had a rebel yell.
