Considering we are 5 hours from BR, I was surprised at the turnout of interest. 20 kids out of 250 seniors seemed interested. They were really pushing the team sports and Engineering programs.

I know sports a big deal, but if LSU's academic recruiters are using that as a major selling point, somethings's f'd up, IYAM.

Awesome sports teams means awesome fun. No problem a college selling fun... That's a better selling point to LSU than most academics.

Meh.

What is one of the biggest marketing tools out there...

Repetition. If you've put any sort of college football programming on in the last 15 years, chances are you've heard something about LSU at least mentioned.

Mark Emmert believed, correctly, that schools with winning programs were able to appeal to a wider base of students. I know several of my son's friends, all smart academic kids, were considering Bama only because of the national attention the football program receives.

My freshman year was 2003 when we won the NC

the following year, LSU had a record number of freshmen enrolling

they certainly seem to be related

They are related without a doubt.

I understand that, and nothing wrong with talking about it, but hopefully they went on from there to other things. If they did, the OP didn't mention it.

Eh.

People in Canada would have no idea what "LSU" is if it wasn't for LSU football.

Preaching sports helps.

I think Emmert did as much for LSU and it's academic reputation as he did for the football program. From a salesmen standpoint, sports gets your foot in the door and the academics closes the deal. Great strategy to improve the overall reputation and standing of the school.

College isn't just about going to class. There are many other aspects.

I'm not going to get in a big argument over an academic recruiting presentation, but I hope there was more to it than sports and engineering, that's all I'm saying.

Well earlier it was just about sports?

The fact of the matter is you have limited time with these students and you want to hit on the high points, what is successful at LSU right now.

Engineering accounts for 23% of all students on campus who have been admitted to their senior college. This is the largest on campus and still growing.

After talking to my son, it started out with an introduction and they passed out some flyers, talked about location, mentioned the food culture, and of course academics. But once the word got out that sporting events were free with the exception of football, questions seemed to be directed that way. He did mention that football season passes were 85 dollars for the year and a possible lottery for Freshmen. Also must go to at least half the games or there would be no renewal the following year. My son is already sold on going so his questions were minimal.
