Andrew Garfield talks about what went wrong with The Amazing Spider-Man 2

It seems there were some issues during the creative process.
quote:LINK
"I read a lot of the reactions from people," Garfield tells The Daily Beast, "and I had to stop because I could feel I was getting away from how I actually felt about it. For me, I read the script that Alex [Kurtzman] and Bob [Orci] wrote, and I genuinely loved it. There was this thread running through it... It’s interesting to do a postmortem. I’m proud of a lot of it and had a good time, and was a bit taken aback by the response."
"Once you start removing things and saying, 'No, that doesn’t work,' then the thread is broken," Garfield continues, "and it’s hard to go with the flow of the story. Certain people at the studio had problems with certain parts of it, and ultimately the studio is the final say in those movies because they’re the tentpoles, so you have to answer to those people."
"It’s a discernment thing," he explains. "What are the people actually saying? What’s underneath the complaint, and how can we learn from that? We can’t go, 'Oh God, we f--ed up because all these people are saying all these things! It’s s--t!' We have to ask ourselves, 'What do we believe to be true?' Is it that this is the fifth Spider-Man movie in however many years, and there’s a bit of fatigue? Is it that there was too much in there? Is it that it didn’t link? If it linked seamlessly, would that be too much? Were there tonal issues? What is it? I think all that is valuable. Constructive criticism is different from people just being dicks, and I love constructive criticism."

That is actually some interesting insight and refreshingly honest.

Yea, this kind of confirms that things went wrong with what they were trying to achieve. I hate it when a studio comes in and drastically changes things to the point where the director can no longer achieve his vision.

Overall not bad, but the cgi was horrible.

I watched it for the first time today and really have no clue how everything connected. I completely missed the point of Peter finding his dad's lab. Was it just to hear him say Peter meant a lot to him? Still not sure what the actual plot of the movie was besides super bad guys vs good guy.

I just don't like him as Spider-Man. He comes off as a little douchebag, like a guy who does a twenty minute touchdown dance after his very first score. This seems like he's blaming everything but himself.

I didn't think there was supposed to be a plot. I enjoyed it. If you tell me a story line was intended, ehh....frick it. Shiny things and explosions was my expectations. It delivered.

Yeah. I got the Fournette vibe too.

Yeah, that's my problem with it. It's Spider-Man 3, but even worse. At least Spider-Man 3 is memorable, and the birth of the Sandman is actually one of the best scenes in comic book movie history. Sure most of the memorable parts (save the earlier mentioned scene) are slock, but at least I really remember it. Not sure if I remember a single line of dialog from ASM2, while I can think of a few from Spider-Man 3.
Just summarize this movie in a single sentence. If you can't, chances are it's shite. The best I can come up with is "Spider-Man pisses off some people and they kill his girlfriend." That's the best plot I can come up with. Compare that to basically every other comic book movie this summer, and they all have very easily summarized plots in one sentence.
And Garfield does have some good points. I didn't like the movie, but I think Garfield is still a really good Spider-Man.

I really enjoyed the movie. I didn't like Electro but I liked everything else.

Yea the problem usually occurs when:

Garfield goes on to say that studio changes had a lot to do with creating an end product that many fans felt was less than satisfactory.

Garfield "is" spiderman...which says a lot given that both of the movies he has been in were utter shite.

quote:Agreed. I think he is a great Spider-Man and it's unfortunate that his movies are bad, especially the last one. IMO though, all of the Spider-Man movies have been bad, with the exception of Spider-Man 2, which was not great but good. I don't understand why they can't get this character right. It makes me mad.

I didn't think The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was that bad. It certainly is not the train wreck Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel turned out to be

I know you're a dumbass for putting IM3 on par with anything. It's the worst fricking comic book movie ever. At least MoS and Spidey actually had their title characters in uniform and in action for at least 60% of the movie. IM3 had Tony Stark actually being Iron Man for like maybe 5% of the movie. Pos.
1.) Man of Steel
2.) Amazing Spider-Man 2
3.) Iron Man 3

My son was a Spider-Man freak growing up. He's 20 now and told me just the other day that the thing he didn't like about the new movies is how they took away the randomness of the character and want to throw in this back story showing how Peter Parker was destined to become Spider-Man.
That's kind of what they did with the first Hulk film. It was like the gamma exposure was the incidental spark for a foregone conclusion to come about.

frick Man of Steel. Iron Man 3 actually had a few good character moments and memorable sequences. Man of Steel was 143 minutes of terrible.
