If you buy a gun, spend a little more money and invest in quality screwdrivers

Buggered screw slots are the mark of a rank amateur, and the 'gunsmith' screwdriver kit you are buying at the box store is Chinese crap. Spend a few dollars and invest in quality like the set below from Brownells:
Set for a 1911 but they carry others - just search on their site
Plus here are a few tips for free:
- Use a screwdriver bit that fills the slot without moving and is almost as wide as the slot
- Take a file and chamfer the corners of the bit to avoid gouging the screwhole in the gun
- Use firm downward pressure when turning gun screws
NEVER EVER use anything other than a hollow ground screw driver bit for gun screws. Using a 'hardware store' screwdriver will guarantee damage and you will be ridiculed by the OB.

very good info...I didn't know gun-specific screwdrivers were made...
what does the term "hollow ground" mean?...

The end of the bit is ground so that the sides are exactly parallel, not tapered like a 'hardware store' screwdriver.

Buggered one once and I always use a gunsmith's set of tools now. back then but now.

Good advice, weagle99. I bought a Brownell's screwdriver set MANY years ago and it's been some of the best money I ever spent.

Invest in a damned torque-driver too.

This is especially true on the old brownings. Those thing have the slimmest screw slots I've ever seen.

Brownells also sells a set for the Brownings that have thin screw slots.
