Wife uses it mostly for research and says it has been says it has been running real slow. Any suggestions on reducing the pinwheel and lagging?

I'm getting the pinwheel as I type this.

Run disk utility and verify permissions, then repair if possible. HDD might be wearing out.

If you go to the apple, then about this mac, it'll tell you the year.

My MBP is a 2009 and runs pretty well, including Yosemite Beta.

Probably could use a ram upgrade if you haven't done so.
