Why is the NFL punishing Ray Rice?

Janay Rice is not pressing charges, she wants everyone to leave them alone. Perhaps this is how they define their relationship.
It's her body, she can do with it what she chooses, even if it means allowing someone to hit her?

I think legally if charges have been presented and the DA picks up the case it does not matter that Janaynay drops anything.

It's all about the court of public opinion and the NFL Shield always being seen in a positive light. If Ray Rice needs to be a scapegoat/sacrifice for that to happen, so be it.
I believe Ray Rice is a TPOS fwiw.

I guess I mean the media. The NFL is just mitigating risk

You're walking down a slippery slope.
Do they think it is bad? Yup.
Does ANYONE think domestic violence is good? Nope.
The NFL is a private entity (with lots of subsidies). They can do what they want. If you don't like it, quit watching.
They are punishing Ray Rice because it hurts the brand. Those that are causing a stink may quit watching because they're offended. Those who don't care, will continue watching. All about damage control.

Roger Goodell runs the NFL like a well-lubricated weather vane, and right now the winds are telling him to ex-communicate Rice, as opposed to several months ago, when the winds told him to slap Rice on the wrist for the same offense.

Why are the feminists not "up in arms" over the treatment of this woman? Does she not have a right to do with her body as she chooses? Why the moral judgement from society and the NFL?
I would expect the feminist to come out and say she has every right to allow her body to be hit. It is her body, her choice. The government, NFL, and society do not have a right to tell her what to do with her body.

I just watched the video that was taken inside the elevator several times with an unbiased eye and I saw Rice attempting to push the elevator button and his girlfriend (now wife) tries to stop him and appears to spit at him. He appears to swing at her to get her away and then backs away. She immediately rushes at him and appears to spit at him again.
Then he takes one swing and knocks her out.
That is self defense to me.
I don't care if it's a woman or a man.
If they come at someone and get within punching or kicking in the balls distance then a man has the right to use physical force to keep from being physically hurt.
Women want to be treated the same as men yet when they want to get physical with a man the man is not supposed to hit them in order to protect himself.
I have no problem with a man hitting a woman in order to protect himself.
The feminazis are just trying to distort what happened in this video in order to badmouth men in general and the NFL in particular.
In other words, whether it is a man or a woman, if you want to get in a fight then don't be surprised if you get hit.

But not to protect yourself from spit.

Why is the NFL punishing Ray Rice?
Goodell then creates a stiffer penalty for future domestic abuse situations, but it does not affect Rice.
Video gets leaked and the Ravens cut Rice and Goodell suspends him indefinitely. If Goodell had been proactive from the beginning on this Rice probably sits the year or possibly 8 games.
Rice is ultimately responsible for his actions but Goodell's handling of the situation is having a far greater negative impact on Rice than it should. The public blow back from the video should not be directed at Rice, we knew he knocked her out, but how Goodell has handled the situation.
