Single Americans make up more than half of the adult population for the first time since the government began compiling such statistics in 1976.

Some 124.6 million Americans were single in August, 50.2 percent of those who were 16 years or older, according to data used by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in its monthly job-market report. That percentage had been hovering just below 50 percent since about the beginning of 2013 before edging above it in July and August. In 1976, it was 37.4 percent and has been trending upward since.

quote:

Singles, particularly younger ones, are more likely to rent than to own their dwellings. Never-married young singles are less likely to have children and previously married older ones, many of whom have adult children, are unlikely to have young kids, Yardeni wrote. That will influence how much money they spend and what they buy.

Finding the person you love and want to spend the rest of you life with doesn't equal antiquated.

No, the practice of standing at a church alter and vowing to spend the rest of your life with the said person in front of a priest (whatever) is antiquated, though.

It shouldn't. Romantic marriage is only a few hundred years old.

rbWarEagle, domestically, the stable family unit is shown to be the most likely to produce productive members of society. It is better than any other arrangement. Do you have a better idea than marriage and family that can be realistically implemented?

For the sake of children, people who bring them into this world should see to it that they are raised properly. That is all I can really say. I know quite a few couples that stayed married out of guilt and raised their kids terribly because they were miserable.

Dude..... That's a contemporary wedding and not marriage. Marriage is a social contract between two people that is mutually beneficial. Now, how you chose to make that happen (priest, rabbi, minister, judge) or whom you chose to enter that arrangement with (straight or gay) is up to the individuals.

I understand that, but a legal social contract (that was once based on land ownership) and a promise to someone (psychological contract?) are two very different things in my eyes.

No, marriage is a bad deal for men.

The marriage contract is the worst deal a man will every sign in his life. From a contractual and legal stand point and man should avoid marriage at all cost.

Apparently folks aren't listening to "society" as much any more then.
