WSJ - Microsoft Near Deal to Buy Minecraft Maker Mojang

Microsoft Corp. MSFT is in serious discussions to buy Mojang AB, the Swedish company behind the popular "Minecraft" videogame, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.
The deal would be valued at more than $2 billion and could be signed as early as this week, this person said.
quote:
An acquisition would be a surprising turn for closely held Mojang, whose 35-year-old founder, Markus Persson, has shunned outside investment and is revered in the videogame community for publicly railing against big corporations including, two years ago, Microsoft.

No way Mojang is worth $2 Billion?
I know Minecraft prints money but outside of it Mojang doesn't offer much.
Good for Notch though. Dude was unemployed and damn near homeless when he started Minecraft. Crazy story.

What does Mojang have to offer now that Minecraft is already on every platform? minceraft 2?

No need for Minecraft 2 since Minecraft is constantly updated. Notch has said as much anyway.
Minecraft also makes TONS of money from merchandise sales and licensing deals.
They do have Scrolls and a few other games but none the size of MC obviously.

Two billion for Minecraft?
Disney paid four billion for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Industrial Light & Magic.
Microsoft has more money than sense.

Told you all mincraft was printing money. MS will buy it and after all the profits are gone, typical MS move.

They could buy the Atlanta Hawks and Falcons for less than 2 billion.

2 billion? Why didn't they just buy Bungie?

That's a hefty price. Maybe they are banking on him making a new IP.
Now that Minecraft is on all platforms, that is the only reason I could see them doing this.Even still what are the chances that Mojang hits big again with a new game.
What am I missing here?

Fwiw, I don't mind dropping small amounts on new skins and stuff.

I wonder if this is playing a part in the whole Bukkit/Spigot/Cauldron nonsense. Tried to update my mod pack caludron server files on Saturday and they were all down due to DCMAs.

If this turns out to be true, it runs counter to what Notch has said in the past.
“I don’t want to work for Valve. I want to be Valve.”
"I've turned down money like that." (In response to the $2 billion of Oculus.)
Obviously he could just be posturing in the above quotes not to mention he can simply change his mind, but it seems like he enjoys being independent.
Whether Minecraft is actually worth that amount of money is another interesting question. All 4 of my young nephews are obsessed with it. They play it whenever they can, and when they aren't playing it they're watching Youtube videos or reading books about it. My son is a little young for it at the moment, but I hear other older kids at his school talking about it constantly. Will Minecraft turn out to be a timeless product / toy, similar to Legos?

Rumor is that Notch might have reached out to Microsoft
quote:
The deal came together after Mojang founder Markus Persson reached out to Microsoft a few months ago, based on a positive working relationship on Minecraft for Xbox, said the person familiar with Microsoft.
The two companies quickly agreed on a framework and approximate price and have been working out the details since, the person said. Persson will help out with the transition, though he is unlikely to remain beyond that, according to the person.
Xbox chief Phil Spencer has a close relationship with Persson, and has flown out to have dinners with the Mojang founder, another person familiar with Microsoft said.

Why would they want Minecraft without the guy who created it?

Microsoft will ruin mojang in the same way they sent rareware to the grave

Notch hasn't worked on MC in a few years. He handed it over to Jens and a small team to take care of so he could focus on other projects.

Plus, he can invest, live the life of a king,
He is already worth over $100 million and much of it is in cash from MC sales. He has stated over and over he already has more money than he can reasonably spend in a lifetime.
He's pretty down to earth like that.
