Will only be for personal use (TD/web surfing/porn, etc) so I don't need anything fancy. There will not be any work related material on it. I have an AT&T I phone if that makes any difference.

Nexus 7. If that is the roundabout size you are looking for in a tablet.

Any nexus tablet. They are fantastic. I am on my 2nd (?) year on it and it runs amazing. Didn't even need to root it even though I do to all my other phones and tablets.

I would likely go with a Venue Pro 8 by Dell. Of the $200 tablets worth mentioning (iPad mini, nexus 7), it's the only one that offers removable storage (microsd), and it runs full desktop Windows with free Word and Excel (and either PowerPoint or PowerPoint Viewer). If you don't view a Windows OS and better CPU as a plus that outweighs slightly better graphics on the other models, pick whatever OS you like best.

I prefer products supported by Google (Nexus), Microsoft and Apple because they provide updates to their software.

For example: a friend has a Samsung tablet that's still on Android 4.1.3 while my Nexus tablet is on 4.4.4.

This may be a dumb question, but do you HAVE to get a service plan when you purchase a tablet or can you sink up with your wifi modem at your house just like a laptop?
