Ray Rice and Double Jeopardy

When the news about Rice first broke on ESPN, at the top of the article, they had a subsection by Roger Cosach talking about double jeopardy and how Rice can't be punished again. Later, all of that was removed. Was I the only one who saw that?

I think he was given a lesser charge and enrolled in a diversion program. The fact still remains that they found it worthy of reporting only to delete it all together.

Yea I saw that breakdown. I didn't know that double jeopardy applied to the NFL, and apparently it does not

Well it's not really double jeopardy. It's new evidence that brings up different things.

New evidence? How else do people think she got knocked out? We live in a visual society where if something is out of sight it is out of mind. The punch is about what I expected when the story was first reported months ago. I wasn't shocked by any means.

We don't know what they suspended for exactly. Could have been punching his gf only. He threw her against a rail and knocked her out.

The thing is the NFL just mandated that a first offense is 6 games. Then a video comes out and the 6 games is now indefinitely. I think rice should be banned forever after seeing that but why make a rule and not follow it? If he just punched her and knocked her out then what? If he shoved her and she got knocked out then what?

You are obviously completely clueless on this subject. Double jeopardy applies to criminal law.

Second, the punishment has already been decided both in court and by the NFL and has been partially served by Rice.
If the NFL or the Ravens tried to increase the punishment by claiming they didn't know what he did, they would lose in court.

NFL can do what they want.
It's not a criminal proceeding nor a court of law. Double jeopardy doesn't apply to court of public opinion. It's a private league and employer. His punishment by the NFL is not risk of loss of liberty - jail time...they can fire his arse if they want just the same as if he did nothing wrong.

There is this little thing called collective bargaining between players and the league. The league cannot simply do what it wants.
