I just flashed cyanogenmod 11 onto my Nexus 5. I have had many Android phones over the years but have yet to flash a custom ROM. After doing this, I don't know that I'll ever use any phone but an Android again. This is too fun being able to customize any part of the phone that I want.

I ran CM for a long time, then I decided to give PA a try. Maybe it's just poor support for my phone (S3), but I never did find a stable version after about 3 months of use. And PA has some cool, somewhat "exclusive" features, but it just didn't seem to be as "complete" a ROM as CM is. I've been back on CM for about a month now, and I've been happy.

Omni on mine and the wife's phone (nexus 5). Rock solid.

To the OP, congrats..you'll never go back. Might as well get titanium backup and back your apps up and try everything out.

PA is for Nexus only, it's all they develop on, anything else on any other phone is just a port with no actual support from PA's core devs.

On a Nexus device it is as complete and stable if not moreso than CM and the exclusive features >>>> any other ROM.

Better watch out, you can get arrested for that.

As a reformed flasher you'll go back to stock soon.

Sure PA and cyan are cool but vanilla android is finally mature enough that rom flashing isn't necessary anymore.

I've been looking into putting CM on my phone but I am terrified by the thought that I might brick my $600 phone. How difficult is it for someone that is pretty good with computers (IT job) but has never rooted a phone before?

ETA I'm having trouble loading fastboot on my PC :(

What kind of phone? It's virtually impossible to brick an android.

So untrue. Kernels alone are worth flashing, significantly better battery life and app control with underclocking certain apps, underclocking and undervolting your CPU/GPU, or overclocking if you want the stats porn.

I underclock anytime I know I need my phone to last awhile, GPU down to 350MHz and CPU down to about 1.5GHz and 2 cores only with a higher per core clock to not lose performance but gain hours of battery.

Not to mention some ROM's just have badass features in general, I couldn't and wouldn't use my phone without PIE and Hover from PA, that goes back to my N4 days with it too.

have you installed this? This will make your process incredibly smooth.

Ignore the geeks who insist you download 782 different command line tools and run them one by one.

Don't do an OTA update or you will have to spend $25 to unlock the bootloader.

Thanks man! I'll give that a try when I get off of work.
Does my battery need to be above a certain threshold before I start this process?

it shouldn't because you'll be connected to your PC via USB but i would make sure you have at least 75% just to be sure.

damn. really?

it sounds like you want to get off the OTA wagon ASAP with this phone.

i'm so spoiled by the nexus phones. you just do what you want.

Yep. I bricked my first m8 dd'ing a modified h-boot. Firewater didn't unlock the bootloader on my replacement so I spent the $25 to have it unlocked. No problems since. I'm running Viper rom right now but plan to switch back to ARHD soon.

So I've been trying to put CM11 on my Sprint m8 and having some difficulty. I ran the scripts from that program that you linked to earlier, and successfully have TWRP and SuperSU installed. When, from TWRP manager, I go to install the CM11 nightly or the GAPPS that I have on in a zip on my phone, it errors out saying it cannot overwrite the data. Tried clearing the Delvik and cache and still getting the same error. Is there an obvious step that I am missing?

Did you download CM11 on your computer and then copy the files over to your phone?

I ask because I had the same issue when I installed ViperOne on my HTC M7. I DL'd viper from my computer and moved the files to my phone from there, but my M7 wouldn't install the rom. So I deleted that file and DL'd Viper directly onto my phone instead of using my computer. That worked for me.
