Let me word this carefully because who am I to question a professional football coach. The most inexperienced coach on the LSU staff knows considerably more about football than I ever will. I'm just always interested in how coaches use their personnel.

In this case....why is T. White returning punts? He is our best DB. Losing him to an injury would be a blow to our defense. Yeah, I know, P. Peterson was our best DB and he returned punts but he was too much of a PR threat to NOT return punts. Do we not have another athlete just as capable of returning punts as White?

I have been wondering how Diarse would look returning punts.

I've been saying Trey Quinn or Charknado. But I feel Trey Quinn is too valuable now.

UGA should have someone other than Gurley returning, right?

Probably because he has great hands and the coaching staff really trusts him back there to catch the football and make good decisions. He has also looked quite impressive and explosive on a couple of his returns.

Same could be said about our last 10 returners. PR is a very important spot to gain field position. You need your best option back there regardless of his 'main' role.

Just some returners...
PP7
Claiborne
Mathieu
OBJ
Skyler Green
Chevis Jackson
etc. etc. etc...

ETA - Chad Jones....All of these were very important players on Off or Def.

The guys returning kicks and punts need to be able to make a big play in a big game that will lead to victory. That in itself is why you put your best back there.

#1 for punt returned you want someone back there that will be sure handed

#2 that person better be able to make a game changing play in a game where you will need that

Can't be afraid of injuries. If he's our best punt returner then he needs to be there

Maybe we should keep all our best players on the bench so they don't risk injury.

He won't be returning punts for long if his decision making doesn't get better. It seems to me he's having trouble judging when to fair catch, especially in the first game.

He has made some poor decisions back there, hopefully he quits diving on balls he should just let go by.

nm - forgot about diving at the ball when its almost stopped.

Not sure if you guys noticed but he did it vs Wisky, very dumb play. When he was running off the field Miles greeted him with a "Great Job!!"

How many guys have actually been hurt returning a punt? Can anyone think of examples?

I think you just answered your own question.

However, I think Quinn and/or Chark will step in - but you don't let a true freshman take reps at that position quite so early (although LF returned our first kickoff against Wisconsin, but he ain't suspect.) Quinn fielded the final punt (fair catch) against SHSU.

Did the one last weekend deflect off of a defender? If the ball hits a defender, there is no good reason not to make a go at it. If you somehow muff the bounce, you can take it at the spot of the illegal touching.

Punts and KOs are totally different animals. Punts are much, much harder to field, plus you have to judge the coverage while making the catch.
