Anyone have the scoop on what went down?

LINK
quote:

Hibiscus opened Aug. 19, in a Magazine Street space near Napoleon Avenue. Chris Cody and Ricky Toy were the two chefs who developed its Asian fusion menu. They thought they would be running the restaurant.

A week after Hibiscus opened, Cody and Toy were out.

quote:

Cody was previously the original chef at the now-closed Dijon in the Lower Garden District. At Dijon, Cody stayed for only five months, departing shortly after the restaurant received a one-bean review from NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune’s critic Brett Anderson.

“The sad thing is,” Cody said, “is that I feel like I could do some good food. But I haven’t gotten the right marriage with an owner.”

Caveat: I did not eat at Dijon....I didn't go after reviewing the menu online. Didn't see anything compelling or interesting on it.

Also thought the menu for Hibiscus was scattered; not sure that the asian fusion stuff paired with a cheese course (?) or that the fusion items were attractive.

I'm the sort of diner who looks at an online menu before I bother to visit a place.

Is it possible the chef is? He didn't seem to have a very long tenure at his previous restaurant.

Pretty sure Cody was the chef at a really good place that opened for a while in Kenner named Pelicano or something like that. His food was great and he seemed to be well liked by that owner.
All down hill since then

I had the unfortunate opportunity of eating at Dijon and the food was embarrassingly bad. Brett Anderson's one bean review came out shortly thereafter.

I wonder it it's a situation where maybe the Hibiscus owner found out about this guy's bad press and let him go? That's a flimsy thought on my part, because both chefs were let go.

Yes the owner is a huge dick…I've seen him cuss out his old employees before when it was n'awlins jazz tourist trap cafe.

but this place is destined to fail…they have still have same shitty wallpaper from when it was a French restaurant…decor is just not appetizing for an "asian bistro" place…also, the new menu while things looked good was just really weird…it has no identity at all…

they want to be Asian Bistro menu and have a cheese plate menu as well? just weird

at least the owner finally took down that 5 foot picture of himself and family in the middle of the restaurant

There's many guesses as to why they were let go. I would assume the owners would have known about his past at Dijon prior to his employment. I don't see how a small place on Magazine St can employ 2 chefs along with staff and still make enough profit to keep an owner happy. Maybe the owners wanted to use them to start the place and ten cut them loose soon after opening. I'm only saying this because I'm seeing first hand restaurants and hotel F&B divisions not re hire a "chef" and just add another line cook to save some money.

Ding ding ding ding

No doubt the owner went with an Asian theme because he saw all the business that Magasin is doing.

THere are a LOT of egos competing in limited space in one restaurant. Two chefs + a-hole owner= disaster

Per Eater, the new chef is David Oser.

ETA: who apparently was a sous chef at Dijon.

bump

This place just wrote the book on how to open a restaurant in terrible fashion.

nola

Hibiscus opened Aug. 19 with two chefs running the kitchen: Chris Cody and Ricky Toy. A week later, they were out and sous chef David Oser took over.

Now, the owners and Oser have decided to move on. The last night with Oser in the kitchen at Hibiscus was Tuesday (Sept. 30). The restaurant is currently closed.

Good news! Who's ready to jump into this money pit?
quote:

Owner Kelly North said she is in talks with several potential buyers who would take over the restaurant and assume the lease. Those buyers could keep the Hibiscus name and menu, she said, or go in a new direction.
