What are the rules on redshirting? I know I've always heard that you can play a certain amount of games or plays and as long as you don't exceed that number, you can still redshirt.

For example, Craig Loston was promised to start his first game at LSU. He started on special teams against Washington, then redshirted that season.

So how many games/snaps does one have to play before they lose their redshirt?

I think that rule is gone

Once you play you burn your redshirt unless you get hurt very early in the season and miss the remainder of the season and only when the NCAA approves the medical redshirt do you get it.

Nope, waiting on the SEC office now

Dude could have been playing at DT for us because honetly that's likely our easiest position to play for right now on defense. We have no studs there.

I am sure that there have been more than a few guys who have played in the first few games but were injured and still got their redshirts for that year.

I don't know whether that can happen these days or not.

Im not sure, but for some reason I think that you have a certain amount of snaps you can play in out of conference games. If you play in a conference game, you are no longer eligible to be red shirted, regardless of how much you play. But I think you are still eligible to redshirt if you play a low % of out of conference snaps.

Could be wrong.

And to be eligible to receive a medical redshirt, the injury has to occur early in the season, at least the 1st half of the season. Not exactly sure when the cutoff is though.

Burning the redshirts of Williams, Chark, Battle, Voorhies, Alexander, Teuhema and Gage is idiotic.

No its not.

Which would you rather have? A guy play for 3 years then go pro, or a guy redshirt and then play 2 years before going pro?

If you are good enough to play at LSU as a freshman and start as a sophomore and JR year, odds are you will be drafted.

No. They could use some good playing time.

Travin Dural is a decent example of this, he is a draft eligible Sophomore this season...and, well, we'll be lucky to hold onto him if he continues to play like he has. I will say I m 90% certain he only red shirted his freshman year because he was hurt I believe.

Knowshon Moreno was voluntarily redshirt by UGA though, imagine if we voluntarily redshirted Leonard Fournette

That's what I thought. There were several guys the past few years that played a little in the first two games and never burned their redshirt.

I like it because it provides competition for each spot on the depth chart. Plus, once injuries start to happen, a lot of those guys will need this early game experience to draw from.

This.

He was looking great as a true freshman and most likely would have been the 3rd WR behind Jarvis and OBJ as a true freshman. But ended up hurting his knee and had surgery. For some reasony I wanna say I think he could have returned towards the end of the season, but we didnt wanna take any chances so shut him down for the year.

Only if they got medicals.

If you play a single snap your standard redshirt is no longer available.
