Fishing the gulf in grand isle question.

Here in grand isle for the weekend. Me and buddy took yaks out off the beach all of a sudden all down the coast huge schools of fish started taking off and flying out of the water. Getting hit by absolutely huge explosions. All day long. The bait fish were just going crazy. I've never see anything like it. It was as far down the coast as we could see all at once the separate schools were getting attacked. We lost tons of baits trying to catch whatever it was. I've never (aside from offshore) experienced strikes like that. The first one I could see a flash as it took my big black mirrorlure and it spooled me in about 8 seconds. It was about 2 feet long. We both lost several baits. Had three hooks straightened. Lost three spools of line between us. We obviously didn't have the necessary tackle but kept trying because it was such a rush. It was fun but frustrating. This was between 30 and 300 yards offshore, all day. It reminded me of how tuna hit schools of flying fish. What says the OB?

Jack Crevalle?
What kind of line/reels were you using?

30 lb braid on baitcasters and spinning reels. We went and bought some 50lb braid and only used our medium heavy rods and that's when the hook straightening started. Decent sized hooks too.

My guess is Jack Crevalle also.

I thought that. But I've caught jacks on my medium heavy rod. These fish were the most aggressive fish I've ever hooked.

Off the beach? I'm gonna go with reds. I've never seen or heard of tarpon that close.
Now is the time of year for them to be there and when they are feeding hard, they are very aggressive.

You haven't fished much then.
I can't believe this is even a question. It was tarpon.

Actually, I've been fishing Grand Isle for over 20 years. On the beach? I've never heard or seen a tarpon caught within yakking reach.

Whatever. I'm just telling you my experience from fishing Grand Isle for over 20 years and talking to others on the island. Maybe you can show me a post from lasportsman, rodnreel, or your own experience that would say different.
And ladyfish don't count.

I'm just telling you that your experience is wrong. And if you don't think tarpon can be caught from the beach you need to live a little.
You're wrong and this is not a question.
It was tarpon.
