Shrimpers plan to tie up boats over dropping prices
Posted by WoWyHi on 9/5/14 at 6:45 pm00
Greed or just trying to make a living? I always see complaining about crawfish prices, but not much about shrimp.
LINK
"The Louisiana Shrimp Association called the meeting after the price per pound dropped almost $2 in the last few weeks. Right now, fishermen can get around $1.80 per pound for smaller shrimp from processors. The Louisiana Shrimp Association says shrimpers were getting almost $3 for the same catch at the start of the season.
"That's $1,400 every thousand pounds I catch," said Acy Cooper, the LSA vice-president. "That's too much, too quick. The market doesn't reflect the downfall."

Unbelievable

Not greedy, just trying to rely on market protectionism. Guessing they probably classify themselves as "conservatives" too.

I just don't know that basically striking is going to be effective. It's just going to piss consumers off.
I have a buddy with 2 boats both just under 40' they are skimmer boats. He has a captain running 1 of them and he runs one himself. He is living very nice. It may be greed on their part but if the factories cant sell the shrimp they have in the freezer the price will drop. Nature of the business.

Viets will still shrimp and will make money.
No doubt. I know for a fact that there's very little loyalty as a group goes. They'll be plenty still out there working, but striking is going to backfire in my opinion.

How would you know? The ones I've interacted with left me kind of WTF, I understood like every 5th word.
Same here. Seen some of the payouts that allowed many of them to retire with the lifestyles they lived after they estimated losses hundreds, sometimes thousands of times hire than actual. They're not hungry, don't need to work, and have the "screw the consumers" attitude.
Thing is, the Viets will pick up their slack. And in a few years, when the lazies have blown through their settlements, you'll see them badmouthing the foreigners wanting to get back in.

I deal with them on a daily basis. My customer list set up in my data base is dominated by Nguyens, Trans and Buis.

I usually get a young one in with an older one. Old one has the cash and the young one is an interpreter.

Yeah, the bored looking one.

They love to haggle pricing. Makes for a good interaction. I love my Viet customers.

This would be pretty damn funny and sad.

I was shocked at what some were getting paid.
