The plague that is video games

I'm a 50 year old man. For the past two nights me and wife have been watching 3 of her nephews and all they do is play damn video games. I have tried to take them outside and do shite with them but my God it's literally pulling teeth. I bought my kids a N64 when they were growing up but it mainly just set there unless it was raining or dark outside.
I'm worried about our nephews. They have absolutely zero social skills. It's pitiful. Is this 12 hour a day video game binge normal for kids these days?

it's not just video games pops.
it's all technology. phones. tablets. tv. computers.
any kid under the age of about 18 can absolutely not be entertained if it's not some form of technology. very little attention span for anything else.

Video games are way more entertaining than your old arse. That's my logic anyway. I played games all the time as a kid and still play from time to time. It's a hobby.

Shut up, Chip, or I'll go ape-shite on your arse!

says the man who already has 1617 posts since 2012. That's mind boggling. Do you ever go outside??

I'd rather kids be inside playing video games than outside screaming and hollering and making noise. At least when they are inside I don't have to hear them.

My parents locked the tv.
There seems to be a disconnect between parents and kids nowadays.
"He doesn't want to go outside. He just wants to play video games."
That is not a good excuse. Make them do something else, emphasis on "make".
It isn't complicated.

There isn't anything wrong with vidya games. Electronics have fricked up intimacy a lot, but I don't blame just video games. I played a ton of video games growing up but my parents also taught me fricking manners so i knew to look people in the eye when I spoke to them, etc.

And what do you mean these days? I'm 35 and when I was that age all I did was play video games, watch movies and listen to heavy metal.

Hey I don't care if they play video games but damn the social skills are scary bad.

Back in my day, we didn't have all of these fancy shmancy gizmo bobbers with their buttons and lights and sounds. We played marbles and cops and robbers AND WE LIKED IT THAT WAY!

Blaming video games is deflecting the problem of uninvolved parenting.

My kids are limited to five hours per week. They are strongly encouraged to engage in physical activity outside.
But, to your original question, yes, many kids spend the entire day on video games.

I hear ya pop, I see this with nephews and nieces of mine and they are under 5 yrs old!
I've cancelled cable a couple years ago, don't own any video games and I consider my life when I get out of work to be way more productive and fulfilling than other people who immediately jump into their scheduled sitcom or video game life.
But then again fulfillment is also subjective and I realize my opinion is somewhat narrow-minded.
Not don't shoot me, but I also see a parallel with video games and sports viewership these days. Since I've cancelled cable and only watch games from time to time and only my teams when that happens, I've noticed that Americans have a large percentage of their lives revolve around watching other people toss a ball around. And worse, get extremely angry when those guys aren't tossing the ball around better than the other guys.
