Getting my first vinyl player and i will need to get a receiver and speakers and I wanted to get recommendations on brands and sizes, or places to look. It is a modern record player so it will be able to hook up to modern receivers and speakers, etc. with no trouble. I was looking at floor speakers but not sure if they will be necessary. Thanks in advance

Price range? You plan on running just the record player off the receiver?

Ehh maybe the 200 to 300 range. I am pretty flexible though. Yeah i plan on only running the record player off of this receiver.

You will be really limited with a $300 total budget. For $400 you can find an entry level receiver($250ish) like Yamaha, Denon, etc and add a pair of speakers from newegg.com or frys.com maybe. You will surely have to find some on sale.

I am expecting to spend at least 300 on the speakers and at least 150 on the receiver.

Gotcha....Look around for some Infinity Primus p363's. Great starter floorstanders. They are $200/each, but can be found for $100 each. They are $160 on Amazon now. You can add a sub later if you want.

ETA: Phil's recs are solid too. It's really about what you like. Try to test a few things out if you can.

unless you're doing it for the nostalgia, don't.

It's a birthday gift and I enjoy a good record. I like the sound of them.

need to get a receiver

If you want to build a stereo, consider nixing the receiver, since you're talking about a rather low-budget range, and going with a Class T or Class D amp. If going class T, consider the Lepai 2020a+ if you want to stay under $20 for the amp. You probably won't get any better sound going for the dayton audio DTA-1, but you'll spend $35 on it (based on the TriPath 2024 circuit). If you can go up to $100, you'll get as good of sound quality out of a Dayton Audio DTA-120 than any entry level receiver. and it's tiny. So if you're not interested in 15 sets of inputs, the same amount of money will probably upgrade your sound a little bit.

Where you'll really start to blow these receivers out of the water, though (I'm not particularly a Dayton fanboy, but for budget home stereo sound, it's as close to top notch as you'll get), is with the Dayton APA150. It's a class AB amp, plenty loud, solid as a brick, pretty quiet, switchable low pass filter, line out, and will only run you $150 or so. You won't find much that compares at that price.

looking at floor speakers but not sure if they will be necessary

Depends what you want out of your system. Check the freq response on speakers. You want something down around 35Hz ideally. Speakers that cut off around 60-80 are going to lack on the low end without a subwoofer. Most speakers that get down to this range are in a larger box, and frequently are floor-standing (though a number of bookshelf speakers will hit the low end decently). At this price, you owe it to yourself to go to best buy (particularly one with a marigold center, but they should have most of the popular speakers in your budget at any of them) and give them a listen. The "color" of the sound is what's important. The quality of the speakers in this price range isn't far off, but the sound can be quite different. It will change with the room, too, but giving what you're considering a good listen is far more important than strangers' opinions.
