Let's get Oklahoma's accolades out of the way first.
There have been 1072 AP Polls all-time (since 1936). Oklahoma has been ranked...
*#1 9.4% of the time - 101 polls
*#1 or #2 18.5% of the time - 199 polls
*In the Top 5 35.9% of the time - 385 polls
*In the Top 10 50.4% of the time - 540 polls
*In the Top 25 70.4% of the time - 755 polls
There have been 79 AP Final Polls, and Oklahoma has been ranked...
*#1 in 8.9% of the time - 7 polls
*#1 or #2 12.7% of the time - 10 polls
*In the Top 5 36.7% of the time - 29 polls
*In the Top 10 48.1% of the time - 38 polls
*In the Top 25 68.3% of the time - 54 polls
The real battle is for CFB's second-best program of all-time. People will throw Notre Dame and Michigan's name into the ring, but they pale in comparison to Ohio State and Alabama.
In all 1072 polls:
School - OSU / UA / UM / ND
Ranked #1 - 94 / 71 / 34 / 98
#1 or #2 -162 / 170 / 68 / 158
In Top 5 - 331 / 327 / 273 / 286
In Top 10 - 555 / 473 / 489 / 508
In Top 25 - 823 / 712 / 795 / 741
In Final AP Polls (79 polls):
School - OSU / UA / UM / ND
Ranked #1 - 4 / 9 / 2 / 8
#1 or #2 - 11 / 11 / 4 / 13
In Top 5 - 23 / 21 / 15 / 23
In Top 10 - 33 / 38 / 37 / 36
In Top 25 - 53 / 51 / 57 / 51
I believe the last 4 years have pushed Alabama slightly ahead of Ohio State, with Notre Dame and then Michigan bringing up the rear. I was pretty shocked how few elite Michigan teams there have ever been considering they have the most wins in CFB and, depending on Saturday's ND game, the highest winning percentage in CFB. LSU has been ranked #1 in 30 AP Polls, 4 fewer than Michigan. That is pretty amazing.
TL;DR version - Alabama edges out Ohio State for 2nd best CFB of all-time.

They won a lot before the Great Depression. Since then not as much.

Where does USC stack up? I would think they would have to be pretty high up there as well.

I reject the premise of your argument.... No, i strenuously object!

Oh, well if you strenuously object then I should take some time to reconsider

I posted this awhile back...
If you just went by the polls...teams most highly ranked in the AP poll year after year since 1936 -
1 Oklahoma 995
2 Michigan 943
3 Ohio State 941
4 Alabama 940
5 Notre Dame 932
6 Nebraska 782
7 USC 773
8 Texas 741
9 Penn State 665
10 Tennessee 659
Since the AP poll is the only consistent ranking system from 1936 through today, CFN came up with a scoring system to compare and contrast how the programs finished over the decades. Every time a team finished No. 1 in the final poll, it got 25 points. The No. 2 team got 24 points, No. 3 got 23 points, and so on with the No. 25 team getting one point. Through the decades, the AP ranked the top ten teams for a few years before going back to the top 20 rankings, and eventually, it went to the top 25 system it's at now.

I would say that is definitely the top 7...maybe Texas is there.
I have seen some CFB media publications...that list it as:
1. OU
2. USC
3. Ohio State
4. Michigan
5. Notre Dame
6. Texas
7. Alabama
And some list it as...
1. OU
2. Ohio State
3. USC
4. Nebraska
5. Notre Dame
6. Michigan
7. Alabama
Regardless, Oklahoma seems to be widely regarded as the GOAT program in every part of the country outside of Tuscaloosa.

ESPN's GOAT -
Point values were assigned for certain successes (win a national title, earn 25 points) and failures (get your program banned from the postseason, lose two points). The research department ran all the numbers through the computer to come up with the No. 1 program (and Nos. 2 to 119) of the past 73 seasons.
1. Oklahoma
2. USC
3. Ohio State
4. Notre Dame
5. Nebraska
6. Alabama
7. Texas
8. Michigan

alabama at #7 is a joke though. up until about 2008, i would have said USC was #2, i think what alabama has done in the last 5-6 years puts them above usc.

I have an SI special edition from the 90s that ranks them all-time. It has Bama at #2. (Oklahoma at 1, USC at 3) This was before Saban. To any unbiased observer, Alabama is now the GOAT. You can google it, CFB data warehouse, etc.

It'll take Zamoro a while to respond because every thing he looks up will have Bama #1-3. That doesn't fit with his bias, he has to find something that will. Gonna take some digging and manipulation...

I agree with the top 7. I don't agree with the order. Alabama is obviously much higher than #7 on that list. Depending on criteria I see USC, Alabama and Oklahoma as the top 3. I see Ohio State as #4 because they've been much more relevant recently than Nebraska, Michigan or Notre Dame which you can place in any order as long as Michigan is last and Notre Dame is next to last.
