Home Media Server Suggestions
Posted by tgrgrd00 on 9/3/14 at 2:04 pm00
So what would you do?
I am interested in a Home Media setup. Basically something that will run XBMC and the likes.
The dilemma is I have a decent Dell desktop sitting around that I can add a few components (HDMI card maybe a stick of RAM) to and throw it in the entertainment center.
Or for about the same price of getting the Dell going I could just get a fancy new Streaming Internet Media Player like this one and call it a day.
tl;dr

I don't have a specific suggestion, but I want to point out a couple things about that Skystream box you linked. It is just an outdated Chromebox that someone installed XBMC on. And from that actual Amazon listing:
Edit: It's not a Chromebox, it is actually this Android box that sells for $90, and Skystream simply bought some of those, upgraded Android, sideloaded XBMC, and marked it up 50%.

Our "on staff" programmer keeps these boxes up-to-date with the newest and latest releases.

Yeah, I'm sure it isn't a 100 person IT staff. The guy "on staff" does everything, he is the staff.
But I wouldn't mind having one of these media boxes being one of this exact ones or not. That one may be a little pricey for what you get.

Not much of a home media server with just 8GB of storage. I'd go with the old PC, it's a lot easier to add more disk storage if you need to.

Good point. It does have expandable memory and external HD slot. But yeah 8 GB native isn't going to do much.

Leaning this way now.
I've been thinking about setting up a full fledged HTPC for awhile. I've been running XBMC on my Apple TV 2 for awhile now. I recently picked up a Fire TV for about $80 and sideloaded XBMC in about 15 minutes. I was surprised how well XBMC runs on the FTV. It is so much smoother and snappier than the ATV2. It's night and day.
For an out-of-the-box cheap option, I don't think you can beat the Fire TV with XBMC installed right now.
