Why didn't Bernie Madoff flee to a non-extradition country?

His sons turned him in hours after he confessed to them. One killed himself and the other died of cancer today, but I don't believe either was ever held criminally accountable. This still would be true had Bernie fled.

He could be living on a cruise ship sized yacht in Venezuela right now sipping on 50 year old French wine. Instead he's rotting away in a prison cell for the rest of his life.

He probably felt like he had been on the lam for decades - mentally exhausted.

you think the one kid committed suicide? Kind of a perfect setup for someone who was supposed to get some big money to take out one of the people that ruined it.

No doubt.

He ripped off Elie Weisel and numerous charities, not just rich billionaires.

However, if I was him, I'd be on a yacht in Venezuela. Being in a prison cell for the remainder of my life will never be an option for me. I'll flee and/or kill myself.

He had hundreds of millions in JUST JEWELRY AND ART according to the 60 Minutes.

Can easily find buyers for that in Central and South America on the black market.

With the reach of his fund, i wouldnt be suprised if the people he defrauded spanned most of the world. Im not sure there was a place where he would have been welcome.

Except for Israel, which has a policy of harboring Jewish criminals no matter what their crime.

He's a huge POS and deserves to be behind bars.

:interesting:

I think he was a super depressed guy anyway and had failed a suicide attempt earlier in life.

But I like where your heads at. Bernie did rip off millions from the Russian mob. Those people don't just forget this kind of shite. That might be the answer to my question of why he didn't flee. Those people don't care about borders.

Why didn't Frank Lucas do that, or AL Capone, or Dennis Kozlowski?

They never think they will get caught, or convicted and don't know when to quit.
when you have 100's of millions of dollars, and your doing it illegally, you'd think they would say at some point, i have a lot of money, i should stop doing this before i get caught. That mentality isn't in them, and is the reason they made as much money as they did.

I'm thinking this has got to be it.

He knew he wasn't safe anywhere besides protective custody.

Yeah but Bernie turned himself in TO BE CAUGHT.

And I'm not sure he could've just stopped and gotten away with it. The nature of a Ponzi Scheme would've prevented that.

I always assumed he fell on the sword for his sons. They certainly knew what was going on along with many others. If he goes missing then the sons are on the hook.
