I went into the store with full intentions to change my current iphone 5 to a galaxy s5 but couldn't upgrade due to my wife is account holder (state employed and we get small discount). But in the meantime the salesman asks me what phone I'm looking at and I tell him I want the s5. He then attempts to convince me I don't wanna switch to android. Are these guys on Apple's payroll or what?? He goes on to tell me about people frequently getting viruses on their androids and it becoming more of a problem, adding how Iphone already comes with the protection you need to prevent such threats. He continues over the next few minutes before I left the store to attempt to convince me not to switch. I had my mind made up when I walked in but left wondering why he was so set on trying to talk me to stay with iphone.

Btw I hate Verizon but they have the absolute best coverage in my area so...

I've wondered if they are encouraged to push certain phones, when I went into to check out the M3 the sales guy would not stop pushing an s5 on me.

Probably just some dumbass that works there and read on reddit that apple is the best. I generally never listen to people that work at retail stores. You just don't know where they are coming from.

To a certain extent yes. Their deal with Apple gives them a lot of motivation to sell iPhones.

quote:

Recently, The Register, a UK tech news website, published a scathing report claiming that Apple has confidential contracts that force the carriers to commit to a given number of sales for forthcoming handsets even before the new designs are unveiled to the public. This means that the carriers eat the loss if they can't sell the product to customers. This is particularly concerning in light of the less than spectacular sales of the iPhone 5C. The Register article referenced a report by the highly respected Wall Street analyst Craig Moffett, who estimated that Verizon (NYSE:VZ) will miss its $23 billion commitment for iPhone purchases by at least $12 billion. Not only does Apple dictate how much a subsidized phone should cost, but it also prevents carriers from giving deep discounts to competitors. (Samsung (OTCMKTS:SSNLF) is also reportedly trying similar negotiating strategies with limited success.) Apple's demands mean that all US mobile phone customers pay an "Apple tax" when buying a new phone, even if they don't choose to buy an iPhone.

I'm pretty sure a couple of years ago I read an article stating that they make more profit/commission on Android phones percentage-wise, so I guess it changes periodically based on how aggressive a company wants to be with incentives for pushing their phone.

Most likely it's this guys own personal opinion. I've heard them all from both sides. Last year a guy told me that Android devices were going to over run Apple because they're cheaper. This year a guy told me he recommends people wait for the iPhone 6 when they're on the fence.

They just want to sell you/keep you in a plan. That's all they care about.

You just have to keep in mind that these guys a.) aren't speaking on behalf of the carrier and b.) know as much as you could have found out for yourself doing 15 minutes of web research.

It also depends on the rest of your "computing environment"... Do you also own a Macbook or an iMac or iPad? Do you have all these linked on the "cloud"?

If so, then I also would recommend sticking with an iPhone for seamless integration with all your other equipment...

If that's not the case, and you don't need to integrate everything AND you are willing to invest some time in setting up your phone to get it the way YOU want it (not the way Apple tells you it needs to be), then yes, I'd recommend switching to an Android phone, HOWEVER... Stay clear of anything Samsung. It's Touchwiz overlay is intrusive and cumbersome. It will lag the phone down over time and doesn't give you the true android experience.

My rec's would be either the LG G3 or the HTC ONE M8. Both of these phones have their own overlays also, but neither are as intrusive as Samsungs and they offer the most "android like" experience.

Where was this advice before I got my S4 last year?

The opposite actually. Samsung, LG, HTC, et al. usually offer commission incentives to sales reps for selling their phones. Apple does not offer commission incentives.

Also, I'm guessing that the carriers make more selling android devices (at least for people on two year contracts) because the subsidies are smaller on average than they are on iPhones.

It's a work phone so I'm just going to guess that I shouldn't do it.

Best Buy is the absolute worst. I've stood within earshot of their sales people telling absolute, flagrant lies to less tech savvy people trying to steer them away from Apple stuff. I mean, insane lies. It is crooked.

Something must have changed then. They used to HATE selling iPhones because they don't make anything on them (or didn't used to).

I work at VZW. If you are at a corporate store, it literally means zero to them whether you buy an android or an iPhone.

That was just that dudes opinion.
