Negotiating a mortgage rate

Is this something that people do? 800 credit with no debts other than my current mortgage. Looking at new house. Was offered 4.25% with 20% down. Was wondering if mortgage companies/banks negotiate the rate...or if there is one I really want to so business with, will taking another lower rate to them lead to them matching? Not sure if the rate they offer is set in stone or not.

It's not. When I purchased my house a few yrs back, my credit union said 3.75 on 30 yr fixed. Had my buddy see if he could match it and he actually got me 3.375 on 30 yr. I told my credit union and they simply matched. Buddy never intended on doing my mortgage, he was just checking to see if credit union was jerking me around.
