Hollywood had worst summer in 17 years

LOS ANGELES — American moviegoers sent a clear message to Hollywood over the summer: We are tired of more of the same. But don’t entirely blame the sequels and superheroes.
The film industry had its worst summer in North America, still the world’s No. 1 movie market, since at least 1997, after adjusting for inflation. Between the first weekend in May through the end of August, ticket sales in the United States and Canada are expected to total roughly $3.9 billion, a 15 percent decline from the same stretch last year, according to Rentrak, a box office data company.
Analysts in the spring had predicted an 11 percent drop, citing viewing distractions like the World Cup and scuttled release plans for films like “Fast and Furious 6? and Pixar’s “Good Dinosaur,” which both had production problems. But the decline was worse than expected, and the reason, analysts and studio executives said, may have been a nasty case of déjà vu.
I want to believe this will force Hollywood to be more original, but I doubt it.

no, we are tired of them farting out mediocre flicks and then being shocked when we dont throw money at them.
also, they need to relearn how to properly make a preview that doesnt automatically make people go "meh"
most previews these days are fricking terrible jumbled messes of random jokes and action scenes strung nonsensically together to the point that nobody even know what the frick half these movies are even about.

Well and it's gotten to the point with the cost of movie tickets and concessions that enough people are willing to say if it's a dud then I'm not going to throw cash at it. Especially when it can be downloaded or they're willing to wait for it come out on DVD.
I'm also sure the rising quality of TV production has done them no favors.

superhero/comic book/fantasy novel movies bore me
people talking/texting in theaters angers me
not being able to pause a movie to pee is inconvenient
I just prefer watching movies at home

Good. Maybe they will be motivated to step up their quality and not put out shitty sequels and comic book movies every month

Yup, it has to be something really interesting to get me to the theatre. Standard action flicks and superhero movies don't cut it.
And even when there is one that I'm interested in I often never get around to it just due to other things going on.
No big deal, it'll be in Redbox for $1.25 soon enough, or On Demand, or Netflix.

This was one of the better slate of summer movies in awhile. A lot of the big tentpoles were quality movies and lived up to expectations - Godzilla, Edge of Tomorrow, X-Men, 22 Jump Street, Planet of the Apes, and Guardians were all good to excellent films.
Compared to last year's disappointments like Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel, this summer was terrific.

Hollywood is too busy taking nude photos and making sex tapes.

I think it's less about the quality of movies and more about home viewing options getting better and better. This summer has had some really good movies I think, but plenty of people don't enjoy the movie going experience and will wait to watch it on their own home theatre. Sports venues age facing similar challenges
Oh and piracy isn't helping either

I've been saying it for a few years, but 2015 is when it all comes collapsing in on itself.

I saw more movies this summer than I have in years and enjoyed all of them.
22 Jump Street (twice)
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I still love going to the theater. Turning my phone off as soon as I walk in the door and "unplugging" for a couple of hours, but the prices are becoming a huge turn off. It's over $50 for my family of 4 to go to the movies after you throw in concessions. Last movie we saw as a family was last summer, and it was $60 for tickets and concessions. Not worth it anymore.

Films I have seen at the theater this year = ZERO.

You can't say that when IM made ~$400 million and MoS made ~$300 (and those are just domestic numbers).
I check box office mojo every week, and I have noticed that a lot of movies this year, even the "successful" ones, haven't made as much as movies past.
I think everything people have said in this thread has had an affect...from a-hole theater goers to solid TV programming to rising ticket prices, etc. Not to mention that movies hit DVDs/rentals quicker and quicker these days.
I still prefer theaters, but the friends I used to go with the most don't live near me anymore. So now it takes something I am really dying to see to get me out and into a theater.

I saw X-men and GotG this year, and that I don't remember the last film i saw in the movies before that.
It's too expensive, i don't like sitting next to people, i always have to go to the bathroom, and i enjoy watching movies on my 60" tv with surround sound free to do what i want.
For as impatient a society we are right now, we don't mind waiting for movies to get to dvd/ondemand to watch them.

Don't forget the dipshits that pull out their phone to record scenes of the movie so they can post on youtube. Had about 10 people do this during Winter Soldier.

take the kids to matinees. If you can take them on a weekday, it's a lot cheaper.
I will also sneak in candy. I'm not paying $4 for a king sized M&M I will pay $5.25 for a coke.
Saw a lot of movies this summer.
Godzilla
22 Jump Street
Edge of Tomorrow
X-Men
Sin City 2
Transformers 4
Guardians of the Galaxy
Winter Soldier
Ghosbusters
Neighbors
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Maleficent

winner.
i have a wife and 3 children and can easily drop nearly $50 just on tickets.
add in another $30 for drinks & popcorn (and thats assuming we're all sharing a single popcorn) and you're approaching a ridiculous amount of money just for a 2 hour movie.
more and more its 'my wife and daughters' go to a movie or 'me and my son' go to a movie.
if its the whole family, we watch netflix on our kick-arse surround system & spend $3 on orville redenbocker.
eta and we can pause the movie for bathroom breaks.
