U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday authorized a request for an additional 350 troops to be sent to Iraq to protect American diplomatic facilities and personnel in Baghdad, according to a statement released by the White House. "The request he approved today will allow some previously deployed military personnel to depart Iraq, while at the same time providing a more robust, sustainable security force for our personnel and facilities in Baghdad," the statement said.

So, too much, too little or both? I'm guessing it's both.

What's that make 1400 or so troops?

Isn't it tradition for presidents and congress to come together and declare war before pouring troops into another country, or did I read that in a fiction book?

The war is over, I mean these are just supplemental eyes and ears, not boots on the ground, in order to protect our information collectors on the ground.
What I really mean is is is, welp, we should just send an ambassador to the new Islamic State a recognize them in an official capacity.
AllllllllIIIHAJIIIII OOOOOO MAAAAA SAAAAA HAAAAAAMMMBIAAAAA.

If he keeps releasing more soldiers to protect embassies, before you know it, we'll be at war again!

1. We never stopped being at war
2. No matter what Obama does, it'll be considered the worst decision ever made in the history of man by 90% of this board
(Just a neutral observation)
3. What should he do instead?

WRONG. OBAMA DECLARED MANY TIMES THAT HE PERSONALLY ENDED THE IRAQ WAR AND BROUGHT THE TROOPS HOME.

WRONG. A GROSS OVERSIMPLIFICATION. NOWADAYS, EVEN DEMOCRATS LIKE FEINSTEIN ARE BASHING OBOZO.

Oh, I don't know . . . perhaps pay attention to warnings about ISIS and precipitate withdrawal from Iraq? But no, not when political considerations trump all.

Hey dumbass, please point to the person who knew of ISIS much less thought of them as a threat at the time we withdrew troops from Iraq in 2012.

Incompetence at it's finest.....And what does that say about the intelligence community and their gross oversight on ISIS?
"Ohhhhhhh, well we were just joking about the troops coming home. Sorry!"

A prudent planner does not plan for a specific threat per se, but for a general threat. The consensus amongst conservatives is that we should have negotiated a Status of Forces Agreement with the Iraqi government into the foreseeable future (five to ten years) to ensure that gains we made in securing Iraq took root (hedging our bets if you will). The problem is, President Obama saw this as a political issue (conclude the war in Iraq and withdraw the troops as soon as possible) rather than a looming security issue. Quite frankly, I agreed with President Obama simply because I saw the situation as a festering sore and wanted it to go away. In retrospect, I was wrong and so was he. However, my opinion has negligible impact. His decision has tremendous implications for the stability of the Middle East.
Should have waited to withdraw troops.
