In just 80 years, some 2,000 square miles of its coastal landscape have turned to open water, wiping places off maps, bringing the Gulf of Mexico to the back door of New Orleans and posing a lethal threat to an energy and shipping corridor vital to the nation’s economy.

And it’s going to get worse, even quicker.

Scientists now say one of the greatest environmental and economic disasters in the nation’s history is rushing toward a catastrophic conclusion over the next 50 years, so far unabated and largely unnoticed.

At the current rates that the sea is rising and land is sinking, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists say by 2100 the Gulf of Mexico could rise as much as 4.3 feet across this landscape, which has an average elevation of about 3 feet. If that happens, everything outside the protective levees — most of Southeast Louisiana — would be underwater.

Stupid. I know nobody that doesn't believe that the canals dug by oil companies and the levees have lead to this.

In 1983 we were told that in 50 years NOLA would be a few miles from the Gulf. Now, suddenly it's AGW and yet another 50 years off?

Considering the government is by far the largest polluter in this country, you can start by blaming them.

Asurob1 or Tuba...I don't know which of you is more retarded.

Coastal erosion and subsidence is a quantifiable and provable phenomenon. No computer models are needed.

Communist propaganda.

...and in only 22 years New Orleans was IN the Gulf.

Bingo.

The government has a knack for fricking things up.

ETA: you halt annual sediment deposition on subsiding landscape, ya gonna get the loss to land. This is really simple science. No hypothetical computer models needed. Simple handwritten models on notebook paper suffices.

You're arrogant to think that man can effect the amount of land we have.

Yeah I guess they could work it all about by hand but that would be a lot of slide ruling.

it's amazing to me you claim to have a PhD based on how pathetic your grammar is, how badly you fail to grasp basic scientific concepts, and by how utterly unable you are to use logic in a debate.

Do Louisiana politicians have their hands out, yet? I'm sure the FedGov can print some more money to "fix" this.
