TE play Will Improve
Posted by Tiger Ryno on 9/2/14 at 8:51 am03
That is about the worst performance by the TE position group I can remember. Dickson fumbled and dropped another would be 1st down pass on a great throw by AJ. Gordon was a turn style trying to pass block. Smith dropped a ball that hit him in the chest. He went down to the ground to catch it and he could easily caught it standing up and gone for huge yards....Instead he clanked it.
I don't think this group is as bad as they played and I believe cam is going drill their bbutts over the next couple weeks. This group needs to be a position of strength for us

.....seems pretty harsh... Sorry couldn't resist.
I agree they will get better.

They didn't do much for getting more balls thrown their way going forward. Dickson fumble probably puts him in Miles doghouse.
I chalk up most of mistakes to first game jitters but when veterans are the ones making some of those mistakes it's a little alarming.
Three upcoming games to work out kinks before SEC play except for MSU in the middle of it but at least it's home.
I just hope Miles doesn't go too vanilla in these games because if they play the way they did the first half Sam Houston and ULM could hang around. Sam Houston does have some offense and ULM did beat Wake.

Smith only needs to be in around goaline situations

We need to go balls out to win these games in style and build some swagger among the young players. Want to see Jennings continue to get more experience tbrowing. We don't need to grind out a 31 to 24 win against these teams. We need to put the hammer down

Logan Stokes was a turnstyle, too.
I'd like to see the JUCO kid, Jeter.

These next few games are the ones where they need to get the TE's involved, not wait until sec play. There's no sense in holding back anything. Run your offense and get the TE's some confidence.

Absolutely. Jennings needs that security blanket to throw to. Idk if Jennings struggles with those throws but I was surprised there wasn't a lot of short or intermediate passes thrown over the middle

It's time for Ensminger to be held accountable for out TE corp. There is no excuse for them looking that sloppy Saturday night.

After that performance, they can't do any thing but improve.

Just asking. One of the most dramatic whiffs by Gordon, which resulted in a sack, appeared to be some confusion between Gordon and Collins. Collins broke to the right with no one to block. Gordon appeared to expect inside help that was not there, and the resulting hole was a straight path to Jennings.

I think they'll get better too, and I don't know about y'all, but I'm getting about tired of these cutsey plays where someone other than a running back or wide receiver touches the ball, and fumbles at a critical point in the game.
Who was it, Copeland?, that fumbled on the 1 freakin pube hair line against Alabama? Now a Dickson fumble? IIRC, he was more of a safey valve on that play, and it wasn't designed to go to him, but just sayin.
Seems like our non RB's/non WR's fumble alot (in proportion to their carries).

I've been talking about this all weekend. Pass plays took way too long to develop and the lack of short and intermediate throws really concerns me.
...And DeSean Smith falling down in the open field to drop a perfectly thrown pass is just ridiculous! Don't fall down, attack!!!!!!!!

That looked like Collins' error. I don't know why he went inside to double down on a passing play. If I recall, Gordon at least blocked someone on that play

I think it comes down to us having a shitty TE coach. He does nothing with the talent he recruits and only has a job because he somehow recruits good talent.

Desean Smith has some of the best hands you will ever find on a TE. That was the first ball thrown to him in the first game of the season. Cut the guy some slack, we are very lucky to have him on our roster and he will do BIG things for us!
re: TE play Will ImprovePosted by wahoocs on 9/2/14 at 10:40 am to TigerAlum93
With Smith's size, receiving is his only advantage.
He saw a few plays early last year. I'm assuming the reason we haven't seen more of him is we have better blockers, and he has shown the same pass catching ability in practice as we saw Saturday night.
I, for one, will be surprised if he becomes a part of the offense moving forward. Dropping a ball is one thing. Giving up your feet, squaring to use your chest and still dropping it is another.

They were pretty bad, the blocking was much better last year from the same guys and the catching as well, although not many chances in that department.

The TE group needs their arse handed to them.....as does their coach.
The performance was easily the worst of the night.
Gordon's was shameful.
