Allowing Turbans, Head Scarves And Yarmulkes

quote:

The Pentagon took steps on Wednesday to give individual troops greater latitude to wear turbans, head scarfs, yarmulkes and other religious clothing with their uniforms, but advocacy groups said the new policy fell short of what they were seeking.

"The military departments will accommodate individual expressions of sincerely held beliefs (conscience, moral principles, or religious beliefs) of service members" unless it might affect military readiness or unit cohesion, the updated policy on religious accommodation said.

The policy was mainly expected to affect Sikhs, Muslims, Jews and members of other groups that wear beards or articles of clothing as part of their religion. It also could affect Wiccans and others who may obtain tattoos or piercings for religious reasons.

Now I've seen a lot of conservative sites and blogs complain about this. They are worried about shira law sneaking into this country. Personally I don't see the issue. If a Muslim wants to join the military and support the country he lives in or maybe has become citizen in. He has to abandon some of his religious beliefs in order to join. I think this is a victory for religious freedom. I know many people freak out about muslims, but most muslims aren't like the radicals, they are peaceful people and don't want to see death to america.

Is there anyone who has an issue with this.

edit: I just realized this is very old, but it was news to me so we will discuss anyway.

as long as it's equal treatment for everyone, I don't have a problem. As long as they're consistent, that's all I care about.

That's the wrong way to look at it. It appears that the new military leadership gives zero fricks about discipline.

I don't understand the purpose of "religious" clothing. I would prefer to see it all go away.

this is a terrible idea. the military is about uniformity and no one being treated differently.

this is insane when it comes to military discipline

I think some muslims believe their head should be covered. I don't know exactly why but that is the reason for a turban.

Even if you don't get the purpose of religious clothing does' mean it should be done away with.

It has been a part of Christian Jewish and Muslim culture for thousands of years. Why should it be done away with now.

I get what you are saying but now no muslim who believes he must wear head covering can join the military.

There is a law that limits the free exercise of religion for muslims. They can't join the military and fully practice their religion.

Military Uniformity is good, but the constitution is more important.

I could write a fricking dissertation on this, but I'm at work and I can't right now.

Discipline and unit cohesion is what wins battles. Personal appearance and uniformity are the most basic forms of discipline. Go look at the morning formation of the most elite infantry units in the world. You won't be able to tell the difference between any soldier in the group aside from the rank on their collar.

so this is more important than religious freedom?

explain to me how military discipline is more important than religious freedom. This is the main issue here.

I'm not going to argue the discipline point. That is a legit concern. But legally you have to argue that discipline can trump religious freedom.

In the military, absolutely. We can trade lived for religious freedom if you'd like, then everyone with religious freedom can go meet their maker sooner than later.

Because it is the equivalence of superstition. You would think that modern people in a modern society realize that religious clothing didn't come as a direction from God but that some humans thought it would be a good idea.

As I understand it Catholic Mass used to be given in Latin. Obviously that went away when enough people realized how stupid it was.

see I have a problem with this. Religious freedom shouldn't be thrown to the side of the door because your in the military.

If I were to join the military, and it was wrong for me to attend Mass on Sunday even when it was possible I would complain. Even if they claimed that you have to learn discipline and not go to Mass. You are in the military, that comes first.

Our country is founded on the principles of liberty. One of those liberties is the freedom of religion. It's not just Christians who have religious freedom. Everyone who comes into this country, Buddhist, Muslims, Jews, etc. should have the freedom to practice their religion fully no matter what path they take in life. As long as their religious freedom doesn't limit the freedom of others, they should be able to fully practice it.
