Without boring you with too much useless info...
-2002 Toyota Tacoma

-Slammed on brakes to avoid idiot pull across the road in front of me.

-Afterwards brake pedal goes straight to floor with car on. No brakes.

-Pedal can be pumped with car off and it maintains pressure as long as car is off.

-Turn the car on and it loses all pressure immediately. Pumping does nothing with car on.

- Almost no brake fluid left in reservoir but I can't be sure how much was there prior to the incident either.

At first I thought it may be a blown master cylinder but since it's holding pressure with the car off, I think this means that may not be the problem? I'm thinking (hoping, really) that it's just a matter of brake fluid and nothing more, but that doesn't seem too likely since if the brake fluid got out somehow, there must be a leak. Thanks.

Check Tacomaworld.com - there is an almost identical thread on there. Great site.

I had a similar issue on my Camaro not too long ago. At first the diagnostic said it was a bad booster, but eventually it turned out to be a leak in the vacuum hose going into the booster. New hose. Problem solved.

Is there brake fluid leaking all over the inside of the tire (rim).. If so I wouldn't drive it. This is just a guess when you slammed on your brakes you blew out a hose or something similar. No brake fluid in your reservoir isn't a good thing and it had to go somewhere. I am guessing its all over one of your rims.

I don't see any. It's been sitting out all day at this point, though. I checked after I got home right after it happened and didn't see any but I didn't have a ton of time to check, either. There is some fluid in there, just very very little, and I don't know how much was in there before. My brakes were always a little soft anyhow. But you're right, something had to have given out or else I wouldn't be having this problem.

What's throwing me off is the fact that it holds pressure indefinitely while the engine isn't running. That makes he hope there's not actually a leak, but I know 99% there has to be.

I haven't driven it. I drove it home right after it happened because I was 30 seconds from my house anyways.

Has the fluid ever been changed? (I'd bet not) brake fluid evaporates over time and it is also hygroscopic.

First, fill it with fluid, try the brakes, if no leaks, they'll work. Report back.

Then we'll go further.

If your brake pads, or shoes have excessive wear, your fluid reservoir would naturally have a low level

Your vacuum booster has failed. Do not drive it until it is replaced.

It does seems like your brakes will probably not work without brake fluid.

Filling the reservoir seems like a 1st step, but your brakes will need bleeding at minimum.

So many frickin idiots on this board.
Tell us genius. How will a bad vacuum brake booster cause the pedal to go all the way to the floor?

Thanks guys. I just got new rotors and pads last year, and I don't drive much at all so I don't THINK it has to do with the pads, unless they just got really fricked up from slamming the brakes. I'm gonna try some more fluid and see how it goes. Couldn't tell you the last time more was added or it was changed but I know I haven't personally EVER done it and I've had the truck since '06.
