Lt. Alonzo Cushing, Battery A 4th U.S. Artillery, fell on July 3, 1863 during Pickett's Charge on the final day of the Battle of Gettysburg.
During the Confederate artillery bombardment that preceded the infantry assault, he was severely wounded by two shell fragments - one that went through his shoulder, the other which went through is groin. Cushing refused an order to fall back to the rear to receive medical treatment. Instead he ordered his battery forward to defend the stonewall from the massive rebel infantry assault.
At the height of the fighting, his battery held its position, firing murderously into the oncoming Confederates.
As the fighting around the stonewall reached its crescendo, a bullet entered Cushing's mouth and exited the back of his skull, killing him instantly. He was just 22 years old.
He is buried atop Cemetery Hill at the national cemetery.

Yep. I first heard of his story several years ago. It's high time he was honored for his sacrifice.
