So, my phone contract is up soon and I’m going to get rid of my personal cell phone and the only phone that will be on the bill will be my wife’s. What’s the cheapest carrier/plan with about 1gb data that we could switch to?

I use Straight Talk, and have been very happy with the service. $45/mo per phone.

Can you transfer an existing number to that?

Do y'all use the phone for calls a lot or mostly texting and data?

I ask b/c I have T-Mobile $30 plan with 5gb data, unlimited text, but only 100mins of talk. Works for me b/c I don't really use my phone much for calling people. If you do go over its only 10 cents a minute.

Looks like she averages about 150 min a month so that would put the bill at $35. Not bad.

How is t-mobil's service around south louisiana?

Check out Republic Wireless. I plan to switch to them when my contract is up.

$25 per month, unlimited everything. I've also heard that the customer support is awesome. They're on Sprint's network. Only downside is you have to use one of their phones, can't bring your own.

I'd also warn against Straighttalk. My SO switched to them and had to switch back within a month. Horrible service, all outsourced, couldn't fix any problems and would just hang up on us. Never got MMS working and the data would just stop working randomly. Complete disaster of a service.

Edit: check out ting too. They charge in "bands" and only charge you for what you use. For example, they charge $9 for 100-500 talk minutes, plus $3 for 1-100 texts, plus $12 for 100-500 mb. Then you just add it up and pay only for what you used.
