Montee Ball - Can Someone Explain the Hype?
Posted by lsugerberbaby on 8/27/14 at 8:50 am00
It seems as though a lot of the RB's in the league are in somewhat of a timeshare...but a lot of people have been talking about him not being one of those backs...and that he'll be the man in Denver.
It's his second year...first to be the starter. I didn't see much from him last year, so can someone explain to me why he's going late 1st/ early 2nd?
I'm drafting tonight in the 10th spot (10-team league/ Non-PPR), and I'd like a little more knowledge about the guy because I'm sure I'll have a shot at him.

It's the role he will play in that offense. Many seem to think he is as talented, if not more, than Moreno. The expectation is for his numbers to be as good or better than Moreno's last year.

people are assuming Ball is going to get all of those TDs inside the 5. They fail to remember that Peyton loves to check out of runs and throw 2 yard touchdown passes all the time.

Knowshon Moreno had 1500+ total yards and 13 touchdowns in that system last season.
That's why. Who cares if Peyton Manning likes to throw 2 yard touchdown passes.
Knowshon Moreno scored 13 touchdowns last season.

I don't really understand your argument. You don't believe in Ball because Peyton checks to passes inside the 5? You can't get around the fact that Peyton produces top RBs year in and year out.

Over the course of Manning's 15 seasons in the league, lining up behind him has been a pretty good gig. In 10 of those seasons, Manning's top rusher has finished among the top 10 fantasy scorers at his position.
1998 -- 3 (Faulk)
1999 -- 1 (James)
2000 -- 2 (James)
2001 -- 11 (Rhodes)
2002 -- 22 (James)
2003 -- 10 (James)
2004 -- 6 (James)
2005 -- 5 (James)
2006 -- 10 (Addai)
2007 -- 4 (Addai)
2008 -- 26 (Rhodes)
2009 -- 8 (Addai)
2010 -- 44 (Addai)
2012 -- 26 (McGahee)
2013 -- 5 (Moreno)
It's worth noting one caveat in that list. In 2001, Edgerrin James tore his ACL six games into the season, leaving the Colts scrambling in the backfield. It's not unreasonable to think he could have been a top 10 option in '01 and again in '02 when he was trying to regain his previous form. Even so, the track record is pretty good.

ETA: I reserve the right to take this back, until this debate is over.
However, I do appreciate the chart.

Moreno is a pretty terrible RB and thrived last year behind Manning. The thought is that Ball is a better RB so he should also have a good season.

That's pretty convincing stuff right there.

I drafted him solely because of what Moreno was able to do last year

Keep it coming ik about to take him at 11 in a few hours
re: Montee Ball - Can Someone Explain the Hype?Posted by ehidal1 on 8/27/14 at 9:50 am to boom roasted
Exactly.
Moreno in 4 previous years:
2462 yds rush 16 TDs
97/853/6 rec
Last year only:
1038 yds rush 10 TDs
60/548/3 rec
Ball still have to prove he can carry a full time load, but he will get every chance. I got Hillman last round just in case in one league. Ball fell to me late 2nd

lulz
Denver had the most rushing attempts inside the 10 last year with 45, scoring 14 rushing touchdowns which was second best to only New England’s 15. Ball should be in great position to get all of the goal-line carries with limited competition behind him.
2nd in the NFL in goal line carries since Manning took over in Denver 3 years ago
